This is the best pressure cooker book I have bought. It has recipes that aren't the old "crock pot-esque" stuff that is so prevalent in other PC cookbooks. I prepared Mr. Ehrlich's Duck Casserole and it was outstanding! For many years, I avoided getting a PC because of it being "dangerous". I remember being scared to death of the ones that my mother and grandmother had, hissing, spitting, Mom and Grams looking at it with big eyes, waiting for it to "explode and burn down the place"!! But the ones on the market now are perfectly safe. I have three of them now and love them. However, some of the PC cookbooks wind up a little lacking. Miss Vickie, the so-called guru of the PC, has within one of her books a section listing the cooking times of "Meats", "Pastas", "Grains", etc but I found that many of the pastas and vegetables were drastically overcooked when I followed her instructions. Anyone want some brussel sprout mush???

I decided to save the environment by using a pressure cooker. Also, as a full time physician, I don't have time to cook during the week so anything that saves time is for me.

I've only made one recipe from this book, the steamed sponge pudding with jam, and it came out very well. I like the recipes and plan on trying more. The photos are good and it is an enjoyable book to look at.

Useful Tool for New Professionals

Very well written with many suggestions and examples of how to best manage an initial interview from start to finish. The author explains the reasons why the methods outlined in this book have been tested and revised when necessary. There are occasions when the author explains a few reasons why some of these methods may not always work and offers suggestions for potential roadblocks when needed. I highly recommend this book to new professionals for direction with the interview process.

Nice Addition

I like this book but for some it might be a bit "fluff" heavy as the "crunch" (system) part is only around 46 pages long. (Including back blurb page, this is around 256 pages total.)

For those looking for reading material for background, however, this will be an ideal purchase. Non-standard backgrounds are discussed, such as an Elf falling in with humans becoming forlorn and potentially socially dysfunctional due to the generations of death the elf experiences around him.

Common Races, predictably, get the most space, at around 8 pages each. Human cultures (Taldans, Varisians, etc) each get roughly 4 pages. Uncommon Races get roughly 6 pages, and Rare Races get roughly 2 pages.

For system-bits, there are Traits, Feats, Alt Racial Traits, Spells, Armor, Weapons, and Wondrous Items. All are racially based. Feats are Teamwork heavy. Races are listed for Spells, but there is nothing describing an exclusive ability to learn them by Race.

I almost forgot the specific (updated) chart for Reincarnation on Golarion. There is a chance you could come back as a Ifrit, Skinwalker, or Wyvaran.

The book itself is fine for those who do not already own previous hardback books under the "Campaign Setting" line. A lot of the information is the same if not copy and pasted, though, there are nice little blurbs within the blue boxes that might help a player or GM make their characters feel more integrated within the settings lore. Such as common stereotypes that others will commonly mistake you for, or you might just fit into that stereotype and make the different varying cultures even more stern in their stereotyped imaginings of your races culture. I found that this book makes a decent gift to a friend who is interested in the setting and wants to further immerse themselves more into Golarion along with making their character a little-bit more grounded to it rather than vaguely following a rough idea they've conjured up from hearsay.

My biggest nitpick with this book is how it missed a golden opportunity to really delve deep into the workings of the more uncommon races. Often times I found my own head-cannon serving me much better than what was presented. Races like hobgoblins should never be considered 'uncommon' when they naturally breed more quickly than humans, are as dexterous as elves and as hardy as dwarves with none of the penalties from neither elves or dwarves. Perhaps I am just being nit picky here, but I cannot help but feel inconsistencies like these really deters the believability of Golarion as a setting.

All in all I thought the book was okay, certainly a good gift for a friend who is looking to improve his A-game as a player and a character within Paizo's Golarion.

Solid for those looking for lore, lacking for those searching for new mechanics

It has been a while since we took a look at some tabletop games, but with the recent release of the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Races, this seemed as good of a time as any to cover this latest campaign setting.

Depending on what you look for from a setting guide, the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Races is going to be either very hit or very miss. It is hard for me to envision much of a middle ground with this one. For those looking for a lot of system mechanics, this release is rather light, ringing in around fifty pages of content. These focus on mechanics such as traits, spells, items and since all of them have racial roots to them, they fit in quite well here. Of course, you do not have to limit these by race, but they were created with these flavors in mind.

There is a clear four chapter structure at play here, with the first focusing on the more commonly known races. While dwarves might not come to mind immediately in a book about sea races, it is work keeping in mind that this tome is trying to create a sense of structure and interaction - not just a bestiary of sorts. The next chapter gets into less common races such as the draw - ones that show up in a good number of guide books, but are not considered part of the primary rotation of races that get used.

The third chapter really starts to get into the more unique races, and here is where I had the most fun frankly. Now these first three chapters are the kind of material I really enjoy from a campaign setting. I can easily enough come up with ideas for my players to do things most of the time, but I enjoy some lore and detail that helps to flesh out characters and the world they inhabit. The first three quarters of this book is heavily focused on on lore, and examples of how some races might blend with others. This just made for really solid reading and made for a good experience from my standpoint.

People such as myself, who enjoy copious amounts of lore and flavor will get the most out of Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Races. The fourth and final chapter revolves around the aforementioned crunch - the game mechanics themselves. On a purely technical level, this is not the strongest of outings for the Paizo books in this regard. While some feats are absolutely cool, other aspects of the mechanics tends to revolve around smaller, less interesting items such as when a particular character might be getting some positive or negative modifiers. They do lend some variety to the combat and skill usage within the campaign, but these types of modifications tend to be a little dry.

As for the book itself, but now you should know what to expect from most of Paizo's offerings if you are a longtime Pathfinder fan. The artwork ranges from pretty good to excellent, with quality paper stock and a hard cover that keeps everything in place nicely. The pages are bound perfectly, with no defects in the book even after reading through it from one cover to another (yeah, I'm one of those types when it comes to campaign settings).

If you enjoy getting some lore and background on races, the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Races is a really solid option for you. I do wish there had been a little more space devoted to the more unique races than the common ones we already know a great deal about, but that time with the uncommon and rare varieties is incredibly well spent. The mechanical portion of the book is a little weaker, with some solid magical items and logical modifiers, but feats are hit and miss and those who come into this looking for a lot of really solid new mechanics to work with will probably come away somewhat disappointed. All in all, a really good offering for me personally - as I fall into the former category more than the latter.

If you want a succinct primer on money and inflation look no further. Irving Fisher (1867-1947) packs a load into 245 pages of "The Money Illusion." Especially helpful are the definitions of "absolute" and "relative" inflation. The two are usually found together, Fisher notes. This has lead to the dropping of the terms "absolute" and "relative" in latter-day discussions of inflation, resulting in much confusion.
Fisher is among the fathers of Monetarism and Neoclassical economics. We may add Supply-Side to the Yale University professor's progeny thanks to his vision of money as an inherently international issue. Fisher's articulation of a world economy lead by a Federal Reserve managing credit and inflation/deflation through the study of price indexes and directing nations adhering to a gold exchange standard sounds a good bit like the Supply-Side idea of using commodity indexes including gold as the major gauge of inflation.
If there are weaknesses in Fisher's teachings they might be classified under "Fed Worship" and "Scientism." The Federal Reserve creates an inflationary bias in the world's monetary system, Fisher rightly says. Consider this (p. 133): "This power (managing credit), rightly used, makes the Federal Reserve System the greatest public service institution in the world." Now consider the reverse of that. Fisher was forced to do so by the Great Depression that began the year after "The Money Illusion" was published. The Jan. 19, 1928 statement by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, which Fisher includes in an appendix of quotations, should be pondered, especially by current-day folk tempted to view the Fed as a fountain of miracles.
Fisher's life and work are examples of how one era's progressives become the conservatives of later ones. The professor's emphasis on dollar stability and his finding that unbalanced government budgets are the leading cause of inflation would get him a chair at any of today's Republican friendly think tanks including the Hoover Institution (named after Fisher's interventionist friend Herbert Hoover). Yet we should remember Fisher was also a prophet of the new world order. During his times the U.S. was taking over world financial leadership from Great Britain. America's Industrial Revolution, began around the time of Fisher's birth, came into full bloom in the Roaring 20s with the start of mass production of automobiles, airplanes, and many other things we take for granted today. Fisher provided a great service by delving the implications of these developments. If I were to assign Fisher's contributions a place in the history of economic thought I would put them high up in the category of "anticipatory conservatism" along side those of his friend Joseph Schumpeter.
Yet "The Money Illusion" left me wondering if Fisher didn't fall into the trap well-encapsulated by F.A. Hayek's phrase "the misuse of knowledge." After all, what are prices? Can they be grouped into indexes that are then used to manage credit and make the monetary unit a deferred standard of payments? What is money? What is economics?
Suppose the naturalists like Hayek's teacher and colleague Ludwig von Mises are right. Does not building a mountain of "scientific" economics, undertaken sagely by Fisher and others with the best of intentions, set us up to fall further and harder than we otherwise would? Fisher's own life and experience with the Great Depression indicate that this may well be the case yet he admirably kept probing and finding new insights including a debt-deflation analysis very relevant to the Great Recession going on as I write this review.
"The Money Illusion" was written before Fisher's "fall," making it interesting on many levels. It is also a very approachable book, written in a worldly, tough-minded style. The title is provocative as are the book's contents. All this reminds us that in word and through deed, Irving Fisher was, above all, a great teacher.

The Birth of Monetarism....

This book represents Fisher's seminal work on money and his recognition as the father of the economic school of Monetarism. In "The Money Illusion" he lays out the nature of money in a modern society and speaks to the false security of gold or any other standard to the "value" of money. He explains clearly the effects of deflation and inflation on currencies and emphasizes the importance of government and their monetary authorities in acting to stabilize their effects through responsible governance of the currency.

Fisher explains and advocates for the integration of the banking system into the Federal Reserve System specifically in the US and generally in all economies. He also recognize that the Fed is already acting as the primary counterbalance on the world economy in 1928 presaging Milton Friedman's critique of the Fed's behavior and incompetence in dealing with the Great Depression.

During the discussion on the gold standard Fisher while not rejecting it does illustrate that it will not provide stability and actually will become a limit as the economy outgrows the physical quantities available on the planet. If the currency is to have a gold basis then he advocates that production of gold should be as strongly regulated as the production of currency by governments and not be left in the hands of individuals or corporations.

The work clearly is the culmination of his early career as a neoclassical economist and lays the foundation for both Monetarism and his future work on debt deflation theory. It is a critical read for both neoclassical and heterodox followers of economics.

I Love Fisher's writing style but the topic wasn't broad enough

The money illusion, AKA inflation and currency deflation, has been explained extremely well in this book but it's simply not the most interesting topic that Fisher has written about. He seemed to have to find too many examples to defend his case but it wasn't really necessary. He is a master of writing and explaining these complicated subject matters. This book simply isn't one of my favs of Fisher but it's a short book and the beginning of the book is the most valuable. In summary, well worth your time reading this very good book.

Best introduction to Western art available

This is undoubtedly the best available introduction to Western art. Although designed primarily for the college textbook market, where it is the leading one-semester text, it should also appeal to the lay reader. The hardback edition is beautifully produced and should find a place on many coffee tables. The illustrations are generally of a very high quality (most of them are in color).

This book has wonderful pictures and gives an excellent overview from ancient to post modernism art. The descriptions are pretty brief though, and do not go into great detail on any particular artist. However, it's an excellent book to get a general idea of the evolution of western art. The book covers significant art movements, and some minor ones as well.

A Nobel-Prize-winning bacteriologist, Jeremy Stone, urges the president to approve an extraterrestrial decontamination facility to sterilize returning astronauts, satellites, and spacecraft that might carry an "unknown biologic agent." The government agrees, almost too quickly, to build the top-secret Wildfire Lab in the desert of Nevada. Shortly thereafter, unbeknownst to Stone, the U.S. Army initiates the "Scoop" satellite program, an attempt to actively collect space pathogens for use in biological warfare. When Scoop VII crashes a couple years later in the isolated Arizona town of Piedmont, the Army ends up getting more than it asked for.

The Andromeda Strain follows Stone and rest of the scientific team mobilized to react to the Scoop crash as they scramble to understand and contain a strange and deadly outbreak. Decent scientific thriller; Must love charts

Definitely not my favorite Crichton book. Bought it recently to re-read - first time was many years ago. It wasn't so boring that I had trouble getting through it - in fact, I read it in one sitting. But it wasn't nearly as exciting as I remembered. It's very intentionally scientific at many points, to the extent that it feels like you're reading a journal article complete with charts/graphs instead of a novel.

The climax of the story, in my opinion, kind of comes and goes without a whole lot of memorability and the story ends pretty suddenly. I found myself thinking, "Wait, is that it?" towards the end. Felt like a lot of build up for a kind of mediocre finish.

As usual, Crichton did a ton of research while writing his book and it shows. There's no lack of very specific terminologies and procedural descriptions.

One thing that may not affect other people like it did me - sometimes my wife and I like to read together with each of us taking turns reading sections out loud. We started this book that way, but had to stop because of the many graphs and charts that we kept having to try to describe. Curious how an audiobook version would handle this.

Overall, I'd read it again in several years but it didn't leave much of an impression.

Horror without Exclamation Points

As embarrassing as this sounds, I had never read a Michael Crichton novel when I purchased “The Andromeda Strain,” first published in 1969. In my defense, I’ve seen the 1971 movie many times over the years. And after finally reading the book, I found that the movie was completely faithful to the story, thanks to screenwriters Crichton and Nelson Gidding.

What I found most intriguing is Crichton’s clinical style in telling the story of a military satellite that has returned to earth, infected with a virus from space. The writing is meticulous as it carefully describes the protocols around retrieving the satellite and examining the only two victims still alive—a Sterno-huffing old man and a baby—after the virus wipes out the tiny population of Piedmont, Arizona. This is an interesting approach to building tension without resorting to hysterics. But don’t fool yourself—the terror is real as we learn that nuclear weapons may be needed to halt the spread. In the movie, the lead scientist Dr. Jeremy Stone is played by Arthur Hill—not the most exciting guy on the planet but one whose quiet ways can come off as disturbing. I can imagine Hill narrating the audio book, letting the horror unfold as the small group of scientists deep underground in Nevada go about trying to stop something they don’t fully understand.

Here’s my recommendation. Read the book, then rent the movie. You’re welcome.

Not as good as expected

This book was a disappointment for me. I realize that this Crichton's early work, however, I was expecting more from such a well known title. The book was actually fun for me in the sense of the difference time can make. He wrote from his contemporary surroundings and technology of the day, the latter of which has advanced considerably in the last few decades. Crichton's description of "computers clicking and whirring away" would leave any young person thinking they were made of wood and stone. Also the mention of General Dynamics Electric Boat Division put a smile on my face, as that is where my dad worked for nearly 40 years.

For the most part, however, this was a plodding and pedantic read. I got the feeling that for most of the book Crichton was simply showing off his knowledge of the medical field. The narrative spends too much time explaining in excruciating detail the different medical and biological concepts being used, and not enough actual story-telling.
