Excellent Biography of a Runaway Girl

Exceptionally well written. Her overall story is compelling, with descriptions of the events and situations she lived that ring true. Rather than overstating and embellishing the truth for dramatic effect, Carissa's story of hope and possibility rings true and accurate. It is refreshing to hear her biography, including a childhood with some crappy circumstances, told without the sense of self-pity, victim-hood and entitlement that is so prevalent today. She has risen above the abuse she endured.
This book opens the door for people from all walks of life to partially understand life on the streets in America, but also may be especially helpful for at-risk youth who are flirting with dangerous forces such as substance abuse and human trafficking.

Would probably give 3.5 stars

Slow to start, slow to finish. The majority was good. One of my issues is that I think she left a lot out of the book as to growing up in a "troubled home" and being abused. The way it appears is that her stepfather threw her out of the front door while she was in second grade. Then, she ran away at the age of 12 because she got grounded and her siblings picked on her. That happens to the majority of us, so I guess I don't understand what was so bad that she went through what she did. I needed more background. And I'd like to know where she got the money for all of her schooling. It was well written, with less than a handful of typos. I would recommend reading it.

Another disappointment I’m sorry to say

Another disappointment I’m sorry to say. I’ve read and have every one of Barry Eisler’s books and most have been 5 stars, although those were the first four or five. However, this book continues the trend that the books and story line has been getting stale and, honestly, somewhat repetitive. As a prequel, I expected and wanted more to the John Rain story of his early life and actions in Japan. How he gets his start, the reasons the interactions, etc. I found that there was less here than in the first few Rain novels. Yes, there were some explanations, but it left too much unanswered and felt like a rush to finish the story. Also, I found it repetitive and a little hackneyed that the reason he left Japan because of a woman coincided with his first novel on too many levels. It did not feel right, read right or even make sense. If it was to show that he would keep repeating his actions from his early time to the later novels I can see it, but not agree with it with the way it was presented. I also expected a lot more of the story and was surprised with how short it was.

The book had a feel of 'let’s tell as little as we can and finish as fast as possible without adding anything to the characters, their development or any new characters'. Everything was one dimensional and the action scenes read like a repeat of most of the other books.

Zero Sum Adds Up To A Win

After a stand-alone title (The God's Eye View) and the introduction of new series heroine (Livia Lone), Barry Eisler returns with a new John Rain thriller, his ninth, a prequel title that picks up a decade after Graveyard of Memories.

This time around, Rain is tasked with eliminating a Japanese politician after taking a job from Victor, a Russian crime boss who has been displacing the Yakuza. Why Victor wants the politician dead and who he answers to are Rain's central mysteries, and after becoming romantically enmeshed with the pol's Italian wife and with his own life on the line John doesn't have a lot of time left with which to operate.

After last year's Livia Lone, I can almost imagine Eisler turning back to his series staple with a degree of relief. There's a comfortable familiarity to a John Rain book, even as we venture back in time to see a younger, less experienced, less seasoned assassin, and it doesn't have the brooding darkness and emotional torment that Livia brought along with her. While Rain is still an emotionally complex figure, and the author continues to find neat new facets of the character to explore, there's also a certain sense that Eisler is happily unfettered from having to explore the psychological repercussions of long-term abuse and the grisliness of sex crimes that predominated Livia Lone. In fact, there are several moments where this book feels downright fun.

Zero Sum is a leaner, breezier adventure with some great action scenes and a bit of tenderness thanks to Rain's relationship with Maria. It's interesting to see him romantically outclassed by an older woman who takes him to school more than a few times, and who leaves an indelible mark on his development that long-time reader's should appreciate.

Mostly, it's just good to have John Rain back again. I'd love to catch up with him in the present-day, post-The Detachment, but I'll take whatever I can get.

The Making of an Assassin

Mr. Eisler breathed new life into his John Rain series by going back to its beginning, Tokyo in 1972. In "Zero Sum" he stays roughly within the early days of his character and again in Tokyo, albeit some ten years later. In the interval, Rain has been involved in para-military stuff in the southern Philippines, though the details will presumably emerge more fully in a future book. He is already a warrior and a killer, but he must still acquire the tradecraft that will come to define his career as an assassin. To a large extent, that is the subtext of this book.

Rain accepts a job of political assassination that ends up pitting him against the dangerous half-Russian, Victor, and Mr. Eisler describes in detail the planning and preparation for some pretty graphic violence. There is also the distraction of a beautiful Italian wife of the putative target, and for some reason Mr. Eisler decided to provide some extremely intimate descriptions of their relations. I deducted a point for porn, but others might well add a point.

Finally, Rain and his policeman friend Tatsu seek to unravel the unsavory geopolitics lying behind it all. It is a good story that hangs together well.

Josh Gottheimer was presidential speechwriter and special assistant to Bill Clinton, and has written speeches for John Kerry, General Wesley Clark, Hillary Clinton, and other high-profile Democrats. In this book we get a glimpse of how Dadi Janki, who is 100 years old uses spiritual insights to live in the now making every moment precious and profound.
