Hated to See This End

Sometimes it's difficult to come into a series on the last installment without feeling lost. Luckily, finding the subject matter and people to be so interesting with lovely characterizations and references to previous events, I quickly picked up with where the story was at that particular moment.

It appears that Annie Zook, the Amish preacher's daughter was a bit of a handful being somewhat willful for a young Amish woman. Evidently she had committed two very grave things that went against doctrine of the Amish people. One was secretly following her heart and pursuing a friendship with Ben an Englisher or `fancy' person, and the other was her love and joy of painting, something very much forbidden within the Amish community. Having been found out, Annie had obeyed her father and terminated the relationship with Ben, as well as promising to not touch her painting for at least six months.

Along with Annie's issues of adherence to the People's doctrine, there were several secondary stories going on. Prominent among them were after a child's bones had been plowed up, Annie's friend Zeke had admitted to slaying his younger brother Isaac; Zeke's wife Esther is being `shunned' by the People for not fully embracing Amish doctrines; and Annie's `fancy' friend Lou who had come to visit embraced the Amish life then went back to her world and now faced questions of faith. More importantly, Ben had returned to Paradise, Pennsylvania with a surprising truth about himself that could change many people's lives, including his own.

Lewis embarked on a tremendous amount of storylines and as far as I was concerned solved all the mysteries, bringing most to satisfying conclusions. She gave an abundance of information which, not having read the previous books, were all answered in this final installment. Personally, I loved the fast pace, the sparkling personality, loving concern and respectfulness of the primary characters as Lewis revealed a slice of life in the Amish community few people are exposed to. My one regret is that for all intents and purposes this is supposed to be the end of a series and I would love to see it continued. I can recommend this book to be entertaining, well-written with likeable characters the reader will enjoy.

good book, but...

I enjoyed the first two books in this series and so, when I sat down to read this one, I had all these expectations of what should happen. Well, some of those expectations were met, but when I finished the story, I wasn't completely satisfied. I don't want to get too in detail with the characters so I won't spoil it for other readers, but for me, there were still some loose ends that weren't wrapped up or satisfactorily explained. I don't suppose Ms. Lewis plans another series to continue the story, but it'd be great if she did.

Somewhat disappointing

I was disappointed in this book, the pace moved along too quickly for my taste and it was so incredibly predictable. This series lacks the depth and complexities that the Abram's Daughters books had. I was very puzzled by the way this book ended. It left me wanting more and seriously questioning the decisions of the characters. They were just not as three dimensional as the characters in the other Lewis books have been.

HORRIBLE BOOK

I purchased this for my Kindle thinking Ms. Jones may have done something right. Was I ever wrong! This book is convulted and jumbled. The characters make very little sense. I don't mind the sex, what I do mind is wasting money on something that gave me absolutely no enjoyment. Spellbinding.....no! Couldn't put it down........YES! Even though it is a short book, it took me a week to read it and I'm a fast reader. I couldn't delete it from my Kindle fast enough. If you MUST read this, don't pay for it. Check it out from your local library (if they actually have it).

I have been reading for a long time and I remember, in the 80's, where there was a trend towards writing books that were a little bit trashy, with a lot of sex, but were also incredibly entertaining.

This is what I was hoping for with Satan's Sisters.

Firstly, I have no problem with a novel with a lot of sex - if it is entertaining and remotely pertinent to the plotline.

Secondly, I did not expect Star Jones to be a high literary author.

Having said all of this, I found this book to be convoluted, silly and most importantly, boring, boring, boring.

As soon as I started reading the first few pages, my first thought was "I guess she is not going to go out on a limb here and write something a little daring". It was obvious, by her opening chapter about a "bunch of women who host a daytime show" that we were simply going to be reading about Jones' distorted(?)view of her own importance and I was not mistaken.

From the get go, I found the characters completely confusing and I just could not figure out why this plotline should be even more remotely interesting to me.

The writing was silly, the characters were silly and the entire book was silly - I even hated the title. This one is a big no for me.

This is one of the worst books I have ever read, and I am an avid reader. Star needs to leave the writing business and make a stab at something else. I couldn't wait to finish it. Those great reviews, must be done by Star herself. She needs to put the venom away and realize that it is time to move on. This book was a real mess.

Marilyn Cruise has done it again in her sequel White Chapel. I absolutely adored this novel and found myself turning the pages eagerly wanting more. I cannot wait for her the last book in the series to be released! Cruise effectively continues the story of a stripper and a billionaire who wishes to marry her for an inheritance. This novel is crazy passionate and had me not knowing my feelings toward the two as a couple. My opinions were changing and developing with every turn in the story. There is only three things you need to accomplish tonight: read this novel, indulge in the seductive world Cruise has created, and dream of a handsome billionaire.

This book continues with Michael and Scarletts plan to decieve his mother Diane, who is as vicious as she is sweet. She definitely sees right threw both of then up to and including her final message to Scarlett. When Michael finally realizes he truly loves her, will it be too late, has all the lies and mistrust really the end? This book will capture your heart so you can't help but go onto book three.

Just short of a PKD masterpiece

A truly astonishing work that, in my opinion, should easily stand among PKD's best work save for one flaw - an unnecessary epilogue that saps a bit of power from the otherwise gut-wrenching finish, putting a happy polish on what should have been a more bleak finale.

Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said is, like the works that best represent Philip K. Dick's career, a "What is reality?" book. The scenario he lets unfold - one day a guy is the Johnny Carson of his time, known and loved by all, the next day he is an unknown without an identity and doesn't know why - keeps you turning pages, wanting to know the truth as badly as the protagonist. The world he creates is, as always, intricate in its not-quite-the-world-we-know details. And the ending? Wow. Remove that epilogue (which in a very unDickian manner wraps everything up in a neat little bow at the end) and it's very powerful. If you've read PKD before, this will be familiar to you - twisted reality, hazy drugs, a world turned on its head - and if you haven't, Flow My Tears offers a good look at everything that makes up what a Philip k. Dick book is.

If only it didn't have that darn Hollywood ending ...

Can't say much more than other brilliant reviewers here. The very intelligent, insightful calibre of most of their reviews tells you something about the book that is worth their attention. Phillip K. Dick wrote a huge number of short stories and novels that are only now able, with the magic of cg, to be made into popular movies, standing the test of time. Although there are some easily forgiven minor future gaffs of technology, Dick's true talent is in the big picture of predicting the way we are headed and in "what if" scenarios. Most of his books I would actually categorize as psychological thrillers, scaring us into mending our ways because this is what can happen if we keep on the way the world is so blithley heading. Flow my tears is one of his better books - those written in the 60's and 70's for me, his best. For anyone not familiar with PKD, this is a good one to start with - you will understand whether you just don't get it and drop the author, or love the quirky originality and have that rare joy of finding an author you haven't read, who has left you a huge body of work to keep you going.

Innes McCartney is a nautical archaeologist, historian, author and broadcaster. He obtained his PhD from Bournemouth University and is known for his work in using archaeological research to identify 40 new German submarine wrecks in the waters around the UK and Ireland. He has published in such places as the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, and SKYLLIS, The Journal of the German Society for the Promotion of Underwater Archeology.
