Preacher: Rapid City Stories, by Dahlia West

Jack "Preacher" Prior is at a crossroads -- literally. Left for dead in the Badlands, he's managed to survive. He's stolen a truck, but where can he go? Body broken, mind reeling from betrayal from his own MC brothers, he knows he won't last a day back in Rapid City in his current condition.

Two roads stretch out in front of him. One leads to the city and one deep into the black hills where no one knows him as the former President of the Badlands Buzzards. Revenge is not a question; it's an absolute. Preacher will get his due soon enough or die trying.

Erin Walker is at a crossroads of her own. Dealt a bad hand by being the daughter of Buck Walker, ex-Rodeo Champ, she's made her own way in the world without his help. She owns Thunder Ridge Ranch outright, and she's carved out a piece of paradise for herself with her own two hands. She's not giving it up without a fight, but she's alone in the world with no one to trust.

In Erin, Preacher finds something that doesn't exist in his own world: a smart, fierce independent woman who sets his blood on fire. For Erin, the mysterious man who threatens her life might very well be the only one who can save it.

Can Preacher put aside his desire for revenge against his old MC and accept what's in front of him: a woman who needs him and a future worth having? Erin knows in her heart that Preacher is a bad, dangerous man, but can she trust him anyway?

Not every choice is theirs to make, though, and in Rapid City the past never stays buried.

Preacher was worth every minute I waited to get my greedy hands on him.
By Mommyneedsabook
I’ll start with the obligatory “I received a free ACR in return for an honest review
*side note* It is absolutely not a requirement to have read the Burnout or Stark Inc series to understand or enjoy Preacher, but it would probably be really fun if you did.
Preacher.
What can you really say about Preacher? Well a lot actually but not without telling the entire story and ruining every heart wrenching, exasperating and thrilling moment.
If you are a fan of Dahlia West, you are familiar with Shooter, which means you know all about getting Slick off the bus/doing Shooter a “favor” by bringing him back his “house mouse’’ scene. Which was by far my favorite Preacher moment (until now). Don’t ask why just go with it. This means that if you’re anything like me you have also been not so patiently waiting for a chance at Preacher’s story. And if you are like me each time that Preacher was mentioned you got down on your knees and prayed to whatever muse Dahlia uses that she found the inspiration and wrote Preacher’s story. I mean really he’s a man of mystery. We don’t ever truly get a lot of back ground on him so we’re intrigued. This brings me to now. Now I know the truth. Jack “Preacher” Prior is an ice for blood in his veins man. He gets played by his own people, left to die, takes a hostage (does a really bad job at that) disposes of bodies, lies, cheats, steals and then ends up where? On a farm, with a Rooster that’s a ninja pimp, a dog as his sidekick, a stallion with an agenda and Erin. Erin who is good and clean and honest and just wants a chance to prove that she can do it and doesn’t need a man to take care of her (clich I know but it fits this story I promise). She is as fearless as Jack is damaged, and as open as he is closed off. Because he doesn’t think he deserves what she is offering, he doesn’t even know how to give back a little bit of what she is offering him. But see that’s the power a good (that’s an important word there) woman has. Men say “they can’t” (and Jack sure did A LOT) and women say “Yes you can, you’re an idiot”. And despite everything she has given him, he just can’t because he still doesn’t want to believe that he is deserving of anything good and sweet and clean.
So no in retrospect Jack really doesn’t deserve the second chance that seems to be right in front of him. He doesn’t deserve a good, honest woman to sink into at night. He certainly doesn’t deserve a chance to fall asleep with both eyes closed and sleep deep. He doesn’t deserve a chance to have dreams and memories of and with a good women and a future, because his past just won’t leave him alone. And until his past is just a fading memory he won’t get a second chance.
So, as I say in all my 5star reviews, go do yourself a favor, One-click Preacher. Get the story of the boy who became the man who held Rapid City in his hands, and in two defining moments lost it not once but twice. Read about the man who isn’t looking for redemption, he knows he is beyond it and the one women who might be just more stubborn than him for believing he deserves it and that she deserves him.

Preacher's salvation
By Meg Reider
I'm so glad I got to learn Preacher's story. He was the childhood friend of Shooter (book 1 of the series) so you just knew that if Shooter once liked him that there had to be potential for a decent man to emerge. In this story, Preacher's life as head of the Buzzard's crime ring comes to an abrupt halt when he is betrayed by power hungry underlings. Against the odds, he survives the treachery and burns for revenge. Only something unexpected happens. He ends up on a horse rehabilitation ranch run by a caring, but strong woman. She teaches him another way of life and slowly shows him the possibility for a different future, if he wants a different life. But Preacher's old life isn't one he can simply walk away from...so he has to find a way out if he wants a future with her. And the way out is fraught with danger and deadly peril.

I loved this book. I loved he first book, Shooter. The subsequent books, Tex, Easy, etc....were a big let down. This is the first one that lives up to Shooter. The love story evolves over time. She's a strong woman, but she can't make it on her own. She needs a strong man who can handle the predators in her life. He's a bad man, he's never learned gentleness or been free from the constant threat of violence. He's steeped in aggression and violence...it's all he's ever known. She exposes him to a new way of living, giving him hope for a future, a real future. Loved it.

A must read!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

WOW! This latest from Ms. West is actually a 5 plus star book!
We met Preacher in some of her previous books in her Burnout series. This book gives us an indepth look into this complex character. Preacher has had a life full of despair and violence but when he's drugged, beaten and left for dead in the Badlands, he comes back to life so to speak and evolve into a person that is so much more than even he thought possible. He meets a strong, smart woman named Erin who shows him that there is another side to life than fighting everyone around him to survive.
This can be a stand alone book, however it will be more enjoyable if the reader reads Ms. West's Burnout series first or at least her book Shooter. Many of her characters from previous books make appearances in this book and her previous books will give the reader a much better understanding of them and how their shared pasts with Preacher help to round out his character.
I really loved this book and highly recommend it to any reader that is looking for a good drama filled read.

Many of the problems that affect our bodies, minds, and spirits are caused by long-buried resentments. Thus there is only one cure: forgiveness. Forgiving is the only way to reconcile ourselves with our past and construct a happy life for ourselves. Dr. Jampolsky offers us the explanation of how forgiveness can free us from suffering, and tells us the reasons why we refuse to forgive. The book guides us through the steps we must take to free ourselves from anger, and it teaches us that we are the only ones responsible for our happiness.

The Short Story: The Reality of Artifice (Genres in Context), by Charles May

The short story is one of the most difficult types of prose to write and one of the most pleasurable to read. From Boccaccio's Decameron to The Collected Stories of Reynolds Price, Charles May gives us an understanding of the history and structure of this demanding form of fiction. Beginning with a general history of the genre, he moves on to focus on the nineteenth-century when the modern short story began to come into focus. From there he moves on to later nineteenth-century realism and early twentieth-century formalism and finally to the modern renaissance of the form that shows no signs of abating. A chronology of significant events, works and figures from the genre's history, notes and references and an extensive bibliographic essay with recommended reading round out the volume.

From Booklist
By a well-known critic of the genre, a general survey of the history and properties of the short story from its genesis in the mist-shrouded early history of literature to its alive-and-kicking state today. This book deserves a place in any public library literature collection because good critical guides to the short story are few and far between, and this one is excellent. Chapter one, appropriately entitled "Overview," reaches back to Boccaccio and Cervantes to find the short story's roots, then succeeding chapters focus on the nineteenth century, when the short story in what we recognize as its modern form began, and move on to the twentieth century, during which it has grown into maturity as a literary form with full integrity. Along the way, May not only discusses important writers but identifies important trends and movements. An appended list of recommended titles wraps up May's edifying presentation. Brad Hooper

Review
"The book constitutes a journey to the author's 'collective literary conscious,' as May reminisces about short stories and courses he has taught. Most useful as a kind of handbook for the general reading public or for an undergraduate short-story class. -W. B. Warde, Jr., Choice

Although intended for students, this manual has much to offer teachers and general readers of artistically ambitious brief fiction. The author of several highly regarded books on the genre, May succinctly and clearly summarizes the development of its theory and practices by references to key Western texts... an excellent starting point for serious reading and reflection. -Virginia Quarterly Review

From the Back Cover
With The Short Story: The Reality of Artifice, Charles E. May, a foremost authority on the genre, contributes a major effort to examine the history and characteristics of the short story from a critical perspective. Drawing on twenty-five years' experience studying the form, May argues that the development of the short story has always reflected "a tension between the traditional mythic origins of the form and the increasing pressures of modernism to depict 'real life.'" The book commences with an incisive overview, tracing how the conventions of the short story have evolved over time, from the form's origins in myth and folktale through its immersions into romanticism, realism, formalism, and, in the contemporary renaissance, the twin streams of magical realism and hyperrealism. In four core chapters May charts the major periods in the genre's development, along the way delving into the stories of a host of representative writers - among them Hawthorne, Poe, Conrad, Chekhov, Hemingway, Porter, Barthelme, and Carver - and offering close readings that entertain as they inform. An in-depth bibliographic essay surveys the principal criticism devoted to the form, while an annotated list of recommended titles furnishes readers with a useful guide to the primary English, American, and European stories of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; a detailed chronology sets forth key publication and birth/death dates from the 1340s to the 1990s. A masterfully written yet eminently accessible study, The Short Story: The Reality of Artifice constitutes an important new resource for students, scholars, writers, and the reading public at large.

One of the best scholars on short story theory
By Flvio
This is not the first time I read Charles E. May. I had read two other articles from "The New Short Story Theories", edited by himself: "The Nature of Knowledge in Short Fiction" and "Chekhov and the Modern Short Story". Both articles and this book I've just bought are being very useful and helpful in the writings of my master's degree thesis on "The genre problem and the short-short story". Charles E. May is a great scholar on short story theory. He goes deep but is very clear in what he writes. I am very thankful to him.

About the Author
Rod Couch began researching and organizing The Top Songs of the Rock Era in 1977 while working at radio station KFXD-AM in Boise, Idaho. The special was first broadcast at KFXD in 1979 when Rod served as music director, and has been updated and published several times since then. In the ensuing years, Rod fine-tuned his work, developing a complex copyrighted mathematical formula and a database that now contains over 13,000 songs to accept fluid data such as sales number, airplay and new releases. The formula helps to rank the songs within the database, and of these, The Top 500 were included in the book The Top 500 Songs of the Rock Era: 1955-2015. Rod lives in Boise with his wife, Lou-Ann.

Why Hasn't Anyone Done This Before?
By Memory Lane Guy
As an avid music lover, I first purchased this book just to see if some of my songs met his criteria as number one songs. Wow, I was taken back at how many of my songs were on his lists! Mr. Couch's systematic, scientific, and real life analysis of the play time, and most importantly, the popularity of the song, really hit home. Rarely, if ever, has a person undertaken such a study. His experience as a disc jockey, I'm sure, lent a hand in his development of this method for choosing songs that would make the top lists. Even though I've already read the book, I find myself going back continuously to review some of the songs I loved growing up. Simply, no one, to my knowledge has ever done this type of study before. I call Mr. Couch's book the number ONE HIT OF ALL TIME!

Recommend To Longtime Fans of the Rock Era
By kxkxsh
I love this book! I have loved music all my life and this book contains songs and stories of all the greats--Elvis, the Beatles, the Eagles, Celine Dion and more. Very well written and enjoyable read. I don't know what the one buyer was talking about when he or she said that words were misspelled or there was bad grammar--perhaps they got an earlier version. This one's fine and a super reference book!

Not all that well written. Some of the facts ...
By William F. Kramer
Not all that well written. Some of the facts of the songs were interesting but there were many that interesting details were left out. Additionally this is the top 500 songs of the "Rock Era". I know that the title doesn't say the top 500 rock songs but it gives you that impression. Many, and I mean many of the songs are definitely not rock songs.

The Confidence Gap: A Guide to Overcoming Fear and Self-Doubt, by Russ Harris

Too many of us miss out on opportunities in life because we lack self-confidence. Whether it's public speaking, taking on a leadership role, or asking someone for a date, there are situations in which we just don't feel equipped to handle the challenges we face.

Russ Harris offers a surprising solution to low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity: Rather than trying to "get over" our fears, he says, the secret is to form a new and wiser relationship with them. Paradoxically, it's only when we stop struggling against our fearfulness that we begin to find lasting freedom from it.

Drawing on the techniques of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a cutting-edge form of cognitive-behavioral therapy, The Confidence Gap explains how to:

•Free yourself from common misconceptions about what confidence is and how to build it
•Transform your relationship with fear and anxiety
•Clarify your core values and use them as your inspiration and motivation
•Use mindfulness to effectively handle negative thoughts and feelings.

“This book could save you years of psychological struggle, yank you out of negative emotional patterns, and help propel you to a much happier, more productive life.”—Martha Beck, author of Finding Your Own North Star

“An exciting alternative to the usual approach of so many self-help books. Harris explains how we can work with ourselves as we are, rather than aggressively trying to alter ourselves. I’m impressed by the simple and effective methods of ACT.”—David Richo, PhD, author of How to Be an Adult in Relationships

“One of the most hopeful (and helpful) messages we can take away from this book is this: we can learn to do the things that matter, even when our minds say it’s not possible.”—Spirituality & Health

Must read for overcoming doubt and fear!
By Barbara S. Reeves
Ah, just as I suspected: all that think-positive-Pollyanna-drivel is poppycock. According to Russ Harris, author of "The Confidence Gap", we evolved to think negatively. A hundred thousand years ago, if you weren't on constant vigil for dangers like lions, tigers, and bears in your environment, you didn't live very long, certainly not long enough to pass on your Pollyanna genes.

So thinking negatively is ingrained in us, and I'm happy to hear that because I sure was getting sick and tired of those Stuart Smalley daily affirmations.

"The Confidence Gap" is a guide to overcoming fear and self-doubt. As a recovering drug addict it's important, very important for me to learn how to deal with fear, because I always dealt with this problem with drugs and "liquid courage." That was my solution for overcoming low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity.

Hellen Keller said that life is a daring adventure or nothing. If we're stifled by fear then our life will certainly be nothing. We'll stay stuck in our comfort zones as life passes us by. Harris lists four common reasons why we're afraid to leave our comfort zones:

1. Obstacles - our minds point out all the obstacles.
2. Self-judgements - our minds point out all our weaknesses.
3. Comparisons - our minds compare us to others who seem to be better than us.
4. Predictions - our minds predict failure.

Before I published my book, I thought it would be the greatest thing I'd ever accomplished, but as soon as it came out, I was attacked by self-judgements. I thought what I'd written was stupid, and of inferior quality, and I almost regretted doing it.

Even worse, I had to write for this website. Every time I wrote something and posted it, I would wake up in the middle of the night berating myself, "Stupid, stupid, stupid. I can't believe I wrote that." I wanted to give up. I discovered that I was "fusing" to these thoughts. That's all they were: thoughts. They were not based on fact, and if they were, so what?

Don't I have the right to say stupid things and make mistakes? So I continued to write and consider it all practice, because there's no way I'll ever get better if I don't continue to plug away. I "defused" from those negative thoughts. They still come up every time I write something, but now I can say, "There's that stupid, self-judging thought. Bye-bye stupid self-judging thought." So I was glad to read this quote from best-selling author Peter Carey in "The Confidence Gap": "Writing is being prepared to be stupid and make mistakes."

There's a lot more useful information in "The Confidence Gap" including Harris' golden rule for winning the confidence game: "The actions of confidence come first; the feelings of confidence come later." There are nine more rules, so instead of listing them here, I'll recommend you buy the book and discover them yourself.

I really enjoyed reading this book.
By Brian Johnson
[[VIDEOID:18c79efd87835e012354485673fdb373]] “Whether you call it ‘lack of confidence,’ ‘fear of failure,’ ‘performance anxiety,’ or ‘self-doubt,’ the chances are it’s cost you dearly in your life. Take a moment to consider: What have you given up? What have you missed out on? What opportunities have you lost because of it?

Over the years, I’ve worked with literally thousands of people who have put their hopes, dreams, and ambitions on hold because they ‘don’t have enough confidence.’ And the sad thing is, this lack of confidence is not due to any fault of their own. It is certainly not because of stupidity, or laziness, or negative thinking, or a deprived childhood, or a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is simply because they do not know the rules of the confidence game. ...

On your journey, you’ll discover a revolutionary new approach to maximizing human potential: a model of change that is firmly based on cutting-edge research in human psychology. And you’ll learn to develop a mind-set known as psychological flexibility—a powerful mental state that enables you to respond effectively to fear, anxiety, and self-doubt. You’ll also learn to develop genuine, lasting self-confidence. And you’ll learn to enhance your performance in any area of your life—from sports, business, and creative arts to socializing, parenting, and sex!”

~ Russ Harris from The Confidence Gap

Russ Harris is one of the world’s leading authorities on one of the most cutting-edge forms of therapy known as Acceptance and Commitment Training, or ACT for short (pronounced like the word act not A.C.T.).

ACT is essentially a powerful blend of mindfulness training and cognitive behavioral therapy. I’ll be covering Russ’s first book (The Happiness Trap) soon where he provides a general intro to it.

This book is, as you probably guessed by now, all about helping us optimize our confidence. Russ basically tells us that we’ve been following the wrong rule book if we want to dial in our confidence. He presents 10 rules on how to win the game of confidence we’ll explore in the Note.

I'm excited to share some of my favorite Big Ideas:

1. Confidence Gap Defined - Thinking that feelings precede action.
2. 10 Rules - For winning the game of confidence.
3. Defusion + Workability - Two very important words.
4. Presto! Instant Success - The result of living your values.
5. FEAR -> DARE - How to make the switch.

REDUNDANTLY HELPFUL
By robomacman
I judge the impact of a book by the amount of index notes I create on the very first pages of the book for quick review. My list is a two pages long. I purchased the book to read about the concept regarding FEAR and DARE, but I got so much more out of this. My understanding of confidence has expanded beyond Belief, Knowledge and Skill as I typically understood it. My behavior quite often fell into "have to feel confident first, then act" despite the desire to take action despite how I actually feel. I will now be better equipped to take Action in the midst of those negative, anxious feelings because I now know how to much better deal with them so I no longer stay Fused with them.

One of the best redundant things I like about this book is that he continually emphasizes that we all have the negative, anxious thoughts. I think, at least for myself, I have viewed my negative, anxious thoughts as an indicator that I am not ready or that they will overwhelm me. The concept of Notice, Name, Neutralize isn't new for me as I have read various forms of it over the years. However, the author's redundant emphasis on Acting in the midst of the feelings and the techniques he provides will be very helpful for me. I am looking forward to what new doors will open as I learn to not let my fear block me from Acting in accordance of my values and goals.

The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns, by John C. Bogle

“There are a few investment managers, of course, who are very good – though in the short run, it’s difficult to determine whether a great record is due to luck or talent. Most advisors, however, are far better at generating high fees than they are at generating high returns. In truth, their core competence is salesmanship. Rather than listen to their siren songs, investors – large and small – should instead read Jack Bogle’s The Little Book of Common Sense Investing.” – Warren Buffett, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, 2014 Annual Shareholder Letter.

Investing is all about common sense. Owning a diversified portfolio of stocks and holding it for the long term is a winner’s game. Trying to beat the stock market is theoretically a zero-sum game (for every winner, there must be a loser), but after the substantial costs of investing are deducted, it becomes a loser’s game. Common sense tells us—and history confirms—that the simplest and most efficient investment strategy is to buy and hold all of the nation’s publicly held businesses at very low cost. The classic index fund that owns this market portfolio is the only investment that guarantees you with your fair share of stock market returns.

To learn how to make index investing work for you, there’s no better mentor than legendary mutual fund industry veteran John C. Bogle. Over the course of his long career, Bogle—founder of the Vanguard Group and creator of the world’s first index mutual fund—has relied primarily on index investing to help Vanguard’s clients build substantial wealth. Now, with The Little Book of Common Sense Investing, he wants to help you do the same.

Filled with in-depth insights and practical advice, The Little Book of Common Sense Investing will show you how to incorporate this proven investment strategy into your portfolio. It will also change the very way you think about investing. Successful investing is not easy. (It requires discipline and patience.) But it is simple. For it’s all about common sense.

With The Little Book of Common Sense Investing as your guide, you’ll discover how to make investing a winner’s game:

  • Why business reality—dividend yields and earnings growth—is more important than market expectations
  • How to overcome the powerful impact of investment costs, taxes, and inflation
  • How the magic of compounding returns is overwhelmed by the tyranny of compounding costs
  • What expert investors and brilliant academics—from Warren Buffett and Benjamin Graham to Paul Samuelson and Burton Malkiel—have to say about index investing
  • And much more

You’ll also find warnings about investment fads and fashions, including the recent stampede into exchange traded funds and the rise of indexing gimmickry. The real formula for investment success is to own the entire market, while significantly minimizing the costs of financial intermediation. That’s what index investing is all about. And that’s what this book is all about.

Review
"excellent advice in a concise and accessible manner." (The Wall Street Journal, April 10, 2007)

"It's hard to argue with the eloquent logic of John C. Bogle's latest ode to index funds…Bogle's 'Little Book' offers much exemplary advice." (Bloomberg News, April 2007)

Among monetary gurus and wise men, John Bogle is a singular case. As the founder of the highly regarded Vanguard Group, he is revered for the company's commitment to providing value to its clients as well as profits to its investors. He even has his own group of fans, called "Bogleheads," who cling to every utterance and pronouncement from the great man.

In this latest entry in the Little Book series, Bogle's gentle prose contains idiot-proof advice for investors at all levels. He punctures the myth of the superiority of mutual funds and instead declares that by using a bit of common sense, low-cost index funds are the way to go for most modest stock investors. He's also wary of the ways of Wall Street and cautions investors to steer clear of its institutional con men and cautions against excessive fees and taxes that invariably eat up profits.
It's not very glamorous or exciting advice, but that's also his point: Slow and steady wins the race. (Miami Herald, April 9, 2007)

"genuinely provides investors with the ideal strategy for making the most of stock-market investing" (Motley Fool's UK website, March 8, 2007)

"It's an easy read that will, I suspect, quickly join Burton Malkiel's A Random Walk Down Wall Streetand Charles Ellis's Winning the Loser's Gameas one of the indexing crowd's favorite books."—Jonathan Clements (Wall Street Journal)

"It's hard to argue with the eloquent logic of John C. Bogle's latest ode to index funds." (Bloomberg Terminal, March 8, 2007).

"provides an opportunity to reflect on a remarkable career and legacy." (Financial Times, 19th March 2007)

"…it is John Bogle's hymn to index-tracking investment, and a fascinating read it is too." (Daily Telegraph, March 2007)

"Those who doubt my reasoning should read the Little Book of Common Sense Investing by John Bogle." (FT Adviser, 24th April 2007)

"…particularly interesting…goes some way towards discrediting the stockpicking virtues taught to me in my time as a financial journalist." (Fund Strategy, 7th May 2007)

"…wittily written, pocket-sized guide…If you want to learn how to avoid the unpredictabilities of the stock market and the fees of middle men, then this book is well worth a read." (Pensions Age, May 2007)

" ... For the individual investor, it presents a solid game plan for growing funds over the long haul." (Directorship, July 2007)

"... read Bogle's new Little Book of Common Sense Investingand you'll see how easy it is to beat the Alpha Hunters at their own game!" (MarketWatch, July 2007)

‘The one big thing that Bogle knows -- and explains so well in this slender volume -- is that buying and holding a broad benchmark of stocks while keeping fees to a minimum leads to higher long-term returns than constantly trading in a vain attempt to beat the market. Common sense? Yes. But radical too, as the entire investing establishment is designed to get investors to do the exact opposite.” (CNNMoney)

"Business books are often written by show-offs who want you to know all about their knowledge of the Greek tragedies and dark-coloured birds. So it was nice to get hold of the simply written Little Book of Common Sense Investing…Its author, John Bogle, in no simpleton. He built Vanguard into a huge fund manager...He is synonymous with index funds in the US. Vanguard's S&P 500 tracker is by far the world's largest mutual fund."—Stephen Cranston, Investor's Notebook (Jan 23, 2013)

Over the course of his long career, Bogle—founder of the Vanguard Group and creator of the world's first index mutual fund—has relied primarily on index investing to help Vanguard's clients build substantial wealth. Now, with The Little Book of Common Sense Investing, he wants to help you do the same.

Filled with in-depth insights and practical advice, The Little Book of Common Sense Investing will show you how to incorporate this proven investment strategy into your portfolio. It will also change the very way you think about investing. Successful investing is not easy—it requires discipline and patience. But it is simple, for it's all about common sense.

With The Little Book of Common Sense Investing as your guide, you'll discover how to make investing a winner's game:

  • Why business reality—dividend yields and earnings growth—is more important than market expectations
  • How to overcome the powerful impact of investment costs, taxes, and inflation
  • How the magic of compounding returns is overwhelmed by the tyranny of compounding costs
  • What expert investors and brilliant academics—from Warren Buffett and Benjamin Graham to Paul Samuelson and Burton Malkiel—have to say about index investing
  • And much more

You'll also find warnings about investment fads and fashions, including the recent stampede into exchange traded funds and the rise of indexing gimmickry. The real formula for investment success is to own the entire market, while significantly minimizing the costs of financial intermediation. That's what index investing is all about. And that's what this book is all about.

Praise for The Little Book of Common Sense Investing

"A low-cost index fund is the most sensible equity investment for the greatmajority of investors. My mentor, Ben Graham, took this position manyyears ago, and everything I have seen since convinces me of its truth. In this book, Jack Bogle tells you why."
—Warren E. Buffett, Chairman, Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

"John Bogle is living a useful life, and this book is a useful contribution to hisfellow citizens. It is dangerous for investors to believe a lot of nonsense, and the nonsense destroyers are particularly helpful when, like Bogle, they never tire in their animosity toward folly."
—Charles T. Munger, Vice Chairman, Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

"Whether you know it or not, Wall Street wants to steal your future. If you want to stop them, drop everything, read this marvelous little book, and take it to heart; your children, and their children's children, will thank you."
—William Bernstein, investment adviser and author, The Four Pillars of Investing

OK for beginners but not detailed enough
By Emzet
This is the typical instance of an investment guru trying to sell their product by writing a book on the advantages of their own investment product.
That is not to say that the book is bad. Index funds are indeed the safest way to go for the average investor. The author does prove their point and he does warn you about the common pitfalls in other types of investment like mutual funds and actively managed funds. I definitely agree with 95% of his arguments.

The reason why I'm not 100% happy with the book is the level. This book is meant for people who do not have the slightest clue about investing or how the stock market works.
I was hoping for something a little more detailed and more technical. This was just too high level and filled with metaphors. I come from a technical background and I need graphs and figured to convince me, not metaphors. There is *some* data and some *graphs* but in my view, it's not enough.
The math is kept at a very low level and the data is a little sporadic. I understand the targeted audience is the average person with little economic background but I was still disappointed.

If you don't have a clue about investing, this is a really good read. The language is simple enough and I guess all the metaphors help convey the general points.
If you're looking for a specialized book on index fund investing, keep on searching.

Here's a little retirement funding AID that is actually worth having
By Grambo
ANYONE who invests really NEEDS to read this book! I lost a BUNDLE in the past year in the market. I began to think my investment advisory firm was NOT taking the best care of me, but the WERE GETTING PAID IN FULL while losing me a quarter million bucks!

And I started researching, looking for "A Better Way." I worked hard, put in many long hours, went through every resource available to me...

And then I found... This little book.

From it I've learned my advisors could never do as good a job for me as I CAN do for myself! This little book has led me to start moving my assets out of "helpers" hands, and finally reap the FULL rewards my invested money generates instead of letting my "helpers" continue helping themselves to MY MONEY!!!

The book is written by someone who is more verbose than I, but the book is well written, informative, and builds the author's case in a logical, stepwise manner. It shows you how you've been wrong, paying high fees unnecessarily. More, it shows you the tool available to everyone that allows much faster wealth building with passive investing than is possible with any active investing.

Yep, if you've got money TO invest (old farts like me do) you really need to read this book. I guarantee you will be helped by it. Especially considering we really can't count on Social Security for our old age. Social Security was never meant to be more than a source of PARTIAL suport! You'd jolly well better have your own money invested and generating enough additional cash to make your life comfortable in your old age, because nobody is going to do it for you! If you think Uncle Sugar is going to keep your comfortable in your older years, BOY are you in for a shock!

Buy the book. Read it. Learn how to be more financially secure, sooner. It's in the book!

Buy Several to Give to Friends

I have read the most recent version of Malkiel’s “A Random Walk Down Mainstreet,” and it made me thankful for those people who actually go out and try to make a return for themselves on the market. It provides a service that current leftist critiques of finance capitalism forget – they provide liquidity and aid price discovery. Now, that is just a small part of what they do, and the bulk of their profits are actual rents, and half of the people will end up losers whatever system they try – because there are some patterns in the market, but I am a believer that the market will stay irrational longer than I can stay liquid. I guess at heart I am pretty conservative about what I do with my money because people like Malkiel and Bogle speak to me so much.

This book is like a cover version of Malkiel’s classic, coming in with a shorter page count and being less of a sales document – though where the recent “Random Walk” made me curious about Wealthfront and reading this made me go to the Vanguard website, I still am paying more in fees than I should to the company-administered 403(b) even in their so-called Index Fund. This is a pretty well-written book, but it does have a bit of an odd structure, with short chapters closed by asides referencing the current point made with an outside source instead of integrating it in the main chapter. Overall, though, it is a strong case for indexing your funds and taking advantage of the work the active traders do. When you are buying the market, you are giving up the chance of some great stock or sector that goes parabolic, but it also prevents you from thinking you are clever and taking a short position in that same sector just before it goes parabolic. Buy and hold and buy again seems to be the best way to ensure that the money you do invest will be there when you need it at the end of your life. I’m not trying to get rich by any means, but I’m also not looking to degrade the quality of my life at the end.
