I was very surprised at how quick the book arrived from the States to Australia, within 10days. The quality was great too, no marks, looks new and was at a very affordable price.

The book gives an insight into how children learn mathematics, this is essential for any existing or trainee teacher or parent. Now in its ninth edition, this book helps equip teachers with the necessary skills, strategies, and activities that are essential for them to have when they are in their own elementary math classes. It incorporates the latest NCTM Curriculum Focal Points as well as the latest guidelines from professional organizations, such as the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics. Best Devotional I have ever read!

Standard set up of a bible verse then followed with a couple of paragraphs explaining the bible verse. I strongly recommend that you read the entire chapter in the bible where the verse comes from... you will get a deeper meaning from it. I also recommend that you only read one day at a time even though you may want to read the next day. There's a sense of journey through life as you read it.

Excellent introduction to "the father of history"

The noted classicist Jennifer T. Roberts provides here exactly what the title says -- a very short introduction to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus. The book is clear, direct, and a pleasure to read. It covers the little we know about Herodotus' life, the writing and influence of his HISTORIES, and various central themes, such as the place of women in Herodotus' writing and in history generally (especially enlightening and useful), the patterns of storytelling in his great book, and Herodotus' pioneering study of ethnography. Strongly recommended as a reading before you tackle the HISTORIES, or excellent reading on its own.

Excellent overview before you settle in with the original histories

I'm becoming quite attached to this series of brief overviews (100-120 pages) of important topics in Western culture, from Roman Britain and racism to Mormonism and medical ethics. There are more than three hundred now, many of them the work of recognized experts, and of the dozen or so I've read, only one has failed to impress me.

Herodotus, often called the "Father of History," is near and dear to my heart. When I first began buying "serious" books in about 8th Grade, I quickly discovered Modern Library's inexpensive editions of the great classics. And one of my first purchases was The Persian Wars. I was already a budding historian and I spent many fascinated hours exploring the ancient world through Herodotus's eyes -- he loved to leaven his narrative with folklore and what we would call ethnography -- and then working through his detailed account of the defeat of the invading Persians by the enormously outnumbered Greeks. If they hadn't managed it, all of history for ever after would be completely different -- and the Greeks knew it, too. Their amazing victory was an absorbing topic for them; how had they ever managed it?

Roberts, a specialist in war in the classical world and in Herodotus and Thucydides -- the other "Father of History," but not nearly so much fun as Herodotus -- does a very good job in the limited space available to her. She lays out the key features of Herodotus's world, and of what "history" meant to the Greeks. She divides the anthropology from the military history and compares his methods in pursuing both -- most of which were original with him, and all of which we now take for granted as being the "only" way to do history. She includes an excellent chapter on the place of women in that world, too -- Herodotus being virtually the only writer of that time who even recognized their existence as a force in society and politics. And she replies forcefully to the canards that have been around for twenty-four centuries, that he was only a storyteller -- the "Father of Lies." As with all the titles in this series, there's a good selected bibliography at the end. A highly recommended and easily consumed volume for anyone who thinks they need to learn more about the ancient world.

An Outstanding Introduction

This is a highly readable, judicious treatment of Herodotus. The author emphasizes Herodotus as a liminal figure, appearing at the transitionary stage between lyric epic, and works of prose; between a mainly oral culture, and that of a more literal mindset; between East and West; between folklore and hard history. In the face of charges against Herodotus that he doesn't merit the honor of being called a historian, she promotes the idea that Herodotus was the inventor of the "docudrama"....a final product that, even if embellished with all sorts of folktale and legends, does faithfully present the history of its main topic...the Persian Wars. With regard to that endeavor, she argues, correctly in my opinion, that Herodotus undertook painstaking research, and all the while exhibited the required skepticism of the true historian. The book is very well written, and I enjoyed the author's enthusiasm for her subject. Like Herodotus himself, there is nothing "dry" in her own prose or presentation. On a final note, one of my favorite modern day histories is that on the American Civil War, by Shelby Foote. Like Herodotus' Histories, his own history is painstakingly researched, but also reads like a great story book. For that reason, I was able to engage with his work more than any other history I have read. To present the facts is one thing, but to present it in an engaging form that will keep the reader as interested in the last page, as in the first page, takes the art of history onto an higher plane.

Those non-biblical views see God, instead, as 1) having a corporeal nature, 2) being unnamable (or ineffable), 3) incapable of any passion, and 4) that the divine realm is occupied with multiple, pre-existent, divine persons. In developing the Trinity dogma, men such as Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Origen, Athanasius and many others absolutely rejected the simple, biblically described, apostolic view of Christ. The ultimate goal for this book, of course, is to restore believers in Christ to the simple, pure, undiluted faith once delivered by Jesus Christ through his apostles.

Truth Versus the Trinity

I would like to say that Tom hit the nail on the head with this one. The origin of the Christian trinity [coined original as trinitas - Latin- or in English the triad in unity] was from the Gnostics and Greeks. Now if tradition triumphs truth then this book is not for you, but if you want to be set free from the broad or wide road that persecutes (and leads to destruction) the strait and narrow road that leads to life, then absolutely buy this book. Peace to all of those who walk in the liberty of Christ, where with one may be free indeed. I sought the Lord {Jesus alone is Lord of all and there's but one Lord; read Zach 14:9/Acts 2:35-8; 10:36} and He heard and delivered me from all of my troubles. Many who used the name of Lord in all things (i.e. exorcisms, healings, miricales, ect.) but not in their baptism were found and wanting in that day. (Matt 7:21-23) That's because they had not applied to all of their words/works/deeds. (Col 3:17) This is plain disobedience to the rock and foundation of Jesus Christ, upon whom the church (called out ones) was founded upon. See Isaiah chapter 4 and Eph 2:20. Nobody ever baptized into the trinity (father, son and Holy Ghost are titles and not names of God - I am a father, with a son and the spirit of life - yet men all call me by my family name, rather than those titles). Anybody who has to see will see the truth, but those who harken to lying vanities forsake their own mercy. If I did not love the Trinitarians, I would of held my peace on the issue. But if you love Jesus/Yeshua/Yeshushuah, then obey His commandments. He said if you believe then you would get baptized in His name. His said that all authority/power in heaven and earth was his. He showed Peter that no other name saves (this means that even if father, son and Holy Ghost were names that they have no saving grace). Read the Scriptures and not the man made doctrines that were adopted by the back-slidden Catholic Church in 325 AD to please a pagan emperor (who wanted unity rather than truth). Until 222 AD the Catholics baptized into Jesus' name. The decades before and after Nicea still had Popes (A.K.A. Pontifex Maximus - or the pagan title that means the bridge builder between the gods (triads)- and men) Such as Stephen and Zachariah, who accepted Jesus name baptism publicly. On thing I have to point out though is that unless you as a Trinitarian are baptized thrice, then your not baptizing into your triad properly. Paul, Peter and the rest of the Apostles to include Matthew all baptized into Jesus' name or were baptized by that name alone. Read your Scriptures folks. Acts 2:38-22:16; Rom 6:1-5; Gal 3:26-28; 1 Cor 1:1-24; 12:13; Eph 4:5; Titus 3:5; 1 Pet 3:21, ect. Jesus was baptized and never said or commanded a Sinner's Prayer. It's a falsehood and substitutional lie. Everyone until Zwingli baptized by belief unto salvation. It took until Moody, Sunday, Bright and GRaham to circumvent the baptismal truth that when we obey because of belief, which saves us now and not water alone as faith without action is dead, were become new creatures in Christ Jesus {and not into some imaginative but tragic doctrine of the trinity]. Peace be to those who really do love the one who died for your sins. If Jesus was not God manifested in the flesh or Emmanuel, then all would be in vain. He alone is the way to God and the sole/uno/one door to God. John 10:9/14:6. The trinity is the thief's way to go around and the chaff of men. May you be found as the 100% (or hundred fold) wheat in the day of harvest. God bless all in Jesus name.

I've enjoyed this series. I'm always eager to get to the next one to "drop back into" the lives of the characters whom I feel so familiar with. They seem like friends and family. This one was great, but short compared to the others. I was disappointed it had to end. Looking forward to see what happens next to my "friends".

There are many wonderful characters, including the two principal protagonists, Ryan and Jamie, whose adventures, over time, are worth reading about. I recommend reading all 18 of the installments completed thus far, as well as those still to be written.

I find it a great book, however the reader must have some knowledge on basic/advanced plasticity topics despite its introductory chapters. Chapters 5,6 and 7 are precious describing recents theories in flow laws, hardening rules, viscoplasticity and damage mechanics.

William Harrington

William Harrington lives and works at his family's cattle station, Olga Downs, in northwest Queensland, Australia. He attended university at James Cook University, Townsville. At the age of 20, he established his own company, Harrington Systems Electronics, which sells the NLIS RFID tag reader – The Pipe Reader that he designed and manufactures. He also received the AgForce President's Innovation Award in 2005. In 2006, he graduated with honors as a computer systems engineer and received the Queensland Primary Industries Young Achiever Award. excellent introductory book for novices to learn about Raspberry Pi or Raspbian

This book is an excellent introductory book for novices to learn about Raspberry Pi or Raspbian in particular. The topics covered in the book range from the Raspberry Pi hardware platform, to all major aspects of the software, including the fundamentals of the customized Raspbian OS, software management on Raspbian, graphical interface, and command-line console. Even people who have an IT background but want to know about Raspberry Pi can benefit from the book. The book was well written and reads like a breeze. The only improvement I would suggest is to avoid using black background in figures illustrating the console. I read the book on an e-book reader. Certain text is difficulty to read inside the console with that setting. In addition, I spotted a few typos, probably because the book was published in a fast pace by Packt. Overall, this is a great book. I recommend it.

A basic text to get you started using the Raspberry Pi.

As with another review, this guide could be considered elementary. Having worked with the Raspberry Pi from it's initial sale and having introduced and taught dozens of people about it, I can say the book is clean and complete. It doesn't go too deep, but it doesn't leave anything out. If you were to give this book and a RPi to a person that has little or no computing background, they would be able to get a basic start on using the RPi. If you were to give the book to a person well versed in Linux or computing, they would find it very basic. Essentially, the text is good at what it does, and not much more.
