Morbid Lead Character

I thought Suzanne Bugler's first novel This Perfect World was superb and was looking forward to seeing what she would come up with next. The Child Inside deals with a very emotive subject; the death of a child, and like her previous novel it is well-written and at times a very compelling read, but for me there was something lacking.

The lead character Rachel is a woman in mourning, not only for her dead child, but also for her dead teenage friend, and also for the death of her marriage. The death of her unborn child and the death of her friend (albeit many years ago) seem so firmly linked together. Rachel seems to view the death of Vanessa all those years ago as a turning point in her life, even though they were not particularly close. Rachel spends much of her time looking back, trying to imagine what life would be like if Vanessa had not died. She also thinks that life in general, her marriage and her relationship to her son Jono would be perfect if only her unborn daughter had not died in the womb.

I found Rachel a very depressing character, although I was sympathetic to her losses, I found her very self-centred and her actions throughout the novel seemed purely to make herself feel better and disregarded anyone else around her.

Despite this, the writing is good and the story is at times quite fascinating. There were times when it dragged a litttle and I found the ending a little unsatisfactory, but I will certainly read her next novel.

Lifetime impact

My review is biased. So there. You see, back in the late 1970's, a flat bed truck rolled down the dirt road right up to my log cabin in eastern Ky. Who dat, I ask? Well, it was the Kerns, along with a bus following them that included their draftsman, so I remember. They were traveling the country looking for idiots who had abandoned a good part of the grid. I say idiots because today I live in a five bedroom house on a lake with ten dogs, a decent garden, and a pension. That life in the log cabin was HARD. Hard, I say. But I wouldn't take anything for it, nor would I ever lose my undying love and affection for the memories of the Kerns. My construction skills at that time were piss-poor (I later became a building instructor and contractor), but they overlooked that and just enjoyed our time together and tolerated my ass-kissing. I had read most everything they had written and would frequently quote their own writings to them, sometimes forgetting that what I was saying came from one of their books. And to this day, I still find myself thinking about what I learned from them. Even though I will soon be seventy, I hope to buy one more piece of land and build one more homestead (log cabins burn all too easily, I found out the hard way, so it won't be quite that primitive), and that is what brought me here, remembering how much I profited from the Kern's philosophy. The details may not be as valuable as might be found in other books...we have incredible choices today when building...but when someone says that when you buy a piece of land that you should own it and walk on it for a year until you know it like the back of your hand before you build anything, and that still influences you 35 years later, you got to pay your regards.

Awesome book!

I want to homestead, become as self-sustaining as possible, get off the grid. Of the many books I've read on these subjects, The Owner-Built Homestead is by far the best. It is written by people who have done it themselves. They explain everything you need to know and gives you examples of how to do things as efficiently as possible to save you time, energy, and money. They tell it like it is so that you are prepared for the reality of being self-sufficient. They cover everything - from finding land and the different things to you can do with it, to building a workshop, a home, a barn, to how to locate different sources of water and how to make use of them - and much much more. They cover the whys of doing things, and both the right AND the wrong way of how to go about doing things. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about becoming a homesteader.

good historic advice

I like this book because it is very much based in the practicalities of the farm/homesteading life. It seems the author really knows his stuff. He makes use of some fairly anitquarian ideas and obscure sources that provide interesting relevant information. This book cover a great deal for its' some 250 pages. It covers everything from fish farming, to well drilling, the hydrologic cycle, planting schedules, fence building, stump removal, soil science and a lot more. Though some is a bit dated this is a good reference with lots of useful information.

Greeks in Venice - the Title Says it All

It can be claimed with some confidence that Greek refugees in Italy were responsible for triggering the Renaissance so it is worth investigating who some of these guys were and what they got up to. What Geanakoplos does is explore the lives and careers of five Greek scholars, along with Erasmus. There is an opening section about the Venice and its Greek colonies like Crete (pages 13-70).

The first Greek scholar (or Disseminators as Geanakoplos calls them) is Michael Apostolis (pages 73 - 110). Apostolis was a minor scholar but Geanakoplos includes him as a typical example the first generation of refugee scholars.

Marcus (or Mark) Musurus (pages 111- 166) was from Crete. His is famous for being the Greek teacher of Erasmus and for being an editor for the Aldine Press. Musurus was a skilled linguist and was responsible for editing the Lexicon of Hesychius.

Arsenios Apostolis (pages 167-200) was the son of Michael Apostolis. He comes across as an unlikeable individual, mainly due to his attempt to seize the episcopal throne of Monemvasisa from the Orthodox and to set himself up as a Uniate bishop.

Zacharias Calliergis (pages 201-222) was also from Crete. He set up a Greek printing press in Rome and developed a cursive Greek font.

Demetrius Ducas (pages 223- 255) worked on the Polyglot Bible in Spain as well for the Aldine Press in Venice.

Desiderius Erasmus (pages 256-278) is so well known I am surprised he was included in this book.

I was a bit disappointed that there was no chapter on Bessarion. His role in promoting Greek studies and collecting manuscripts is well known but I don't think there is a suitable account of his scholarly actives in English. Geanakoplos does not really explore the religious side of many of these scholars. In order to function in Italian society they all converted to the Catholic Church. I felt the issue of these converts sincerity (with the exception of Arsenios Apostolic who seems to have been a fanatical Catholic) have been interesting to investigate. Nevertheless, Geanakoplos does a great job at exploring the roles of his subjects. The quotes Geanakoplos makes from the correspondence of his subjects really adds to his biographical surveys.

Easily the best book available on email marketing

I've read nearly every book on email marketing. I've spent thousands on email marketing courses, and I publish a daily email newsletter and you need to know that this book is EASILY the most comprehensive on the subject. It explains why email is an important medium, and systematically lays out everything you must know to make it work for you: the psychology of email persuasion, how to develop your voice, what to write about...even the technology you'll need. I highly recommend it.

Great...Now I have to re-think EVERYTHING!

l've long been a student of email marketing, and I'm not bad at it, if I can be so bold. (Both my open rate and CTR are three times the industry average and reader engagement is really strong.)

But reading through Mr. Brodie's book, I see so many ways to improve my email strategy...so many concepts that I hadn't fully grasped before...so many opportunities to quit "winging it" and be purposeful.

Email Persuasion is a fantastic resource from a true boots-on-the-ground expert. Of course, having been reading Ian's emails for a couple years now, I expected nothing less.

Even after pulling back the curtain and revealing his secrets, I'm no less in awe of this email-writing wizard.

Highly recommended for entrepreneurs, marketers and anyone who uses email to make things happen.

A perfect example of armchair "gurus" rife in the digital marketing space.

Who's writing these reviews? There's nothing in here that you cannot learn by reading a few random blog posts on email marketing. The author writes with a "blogger mindset" - curating content, quoting other 'experts' and 'self appointed gurus', without adding real value and insights that come with experience.

The whole book is all fluff and mostly a "wall of text" without actionable illustrations or insights. Buy this if you are a small time wannabe "guru" peddling webinars and such. Get the "Rebel's guide to email marketing" or even the for dummies book on email marketing if you want to walk feeling you have learnt something actionable. The author only tells, but doesn't show. Experience in having actully done what is being taught is clearly lacking. A perfect example of armchair "gurus" rife in the digital marketing space.

And I have nothing against self publishers who print books "just in time", but at least put some ink into the printer so that the print is not so light that we have to strain our eyes to read.

Heavily-researched book about a fascinating but frightening man

I came to this book knowing nothing about Allen Dulles. I learned not just about him and his control of what we do and do not know about our country's dark past, but also new (to me) information about JFK's murder. I was less interested in the Nazi section than the assassination section, but the whole book is solid reading. Talbot kept firm control of his material and laid it out in inviting prose that prompted me to keep turning the pages. This struck me as a feat not many writers could have pulled off so successfully. The amount of research that went into this book is impressive (an understatement), but it's the delivery of that research that makes The Devil's Chessboard so readable.

Update: I read the book a second time and changed my mind about being more interested in the JFK section than the Nazi section. This time around, the Nazi section unfolded in my mind like a movie. In fact, I'd like to see a movie based on this entire book. Yet again I am wowed by Talbot's research.

I am reviewing this book as I go along. It is a page turner. It's been awhile since I have read a book where I am using so many highlights to be able to go back to pertinent key words and sentences as the material is so rich. I have put down all other books I am reading for this book. It is bound to be a classic I believe. I have a feeling it will do for this subject matter much as James Douglass's 'JFK and the Unspeakable' did for pure assassination research. I was not aware of HOW deep the Dulles/Nazi connection was. The writing style is crisp and to the point. Thank you Mr. Talbot for this wonderful book.
