Exploring the strange and hazy days before nerds ruled the earth, tech writer Steve Lohr's Go To is a great introduction to the softer side of the information age. Sure, he covers the Microsoft and Apple stories, but he also digs deeply to learn how Fortran and Cobol were developed and ventures into the open-source world. Lohr is adept at personalizing the process of software development, which serves to make some of the business and technical decisions more comprehensible to the lay reader.

IBM conducted yearly employee reviews called the "Performance Improvement Program," or Pip, for short. The Pip, like most such programs today, followed a rigid formula, with numbers and rankings. [John] Backus decided the Pip system was ill-suited for measuring the performance of his programmers, so his approach was to mostly ignore it. One afternoon, for example, he called Lois Haibt over for a chat. He talked about her work, said she had been doing an excellent job and then pushed a small piece of paper across the desk saying, "This is your new salary," a pleasing raise, as Haibt recalled. As she got up to leave, Backus mentioned in passing, "In case anyone should ask, this was your Pip."

Since he starts early in the history of the field, Lohr gets to share some of the oddities of the days before programming was professionalized. Developers were kids, musicians, game experts, and practically anyone who showed an interest. Many readers will be surprised and delighted to read of the strong recruitment of women and their many contributions to software development--an aspect of geek history that has long been neglected. About a year too late to take advantage of public hunger for behind-the-scenes computer biz accounts, New York Times technology correspondent Lohr's learned narrative never quite engages the reader. A series of portraits describes the unique band of outsiders who commanded the lumbering, room-sized computers of the postwar era. These men played a headache-inducing game called "blind chess," built their own stereos and could detect a computer malfunction by sound. The book kicks off in the 1950s at IBM, where several of these visionaries were trying to make the company's computers more efficient. Men like John Backus (one is tempted to call him the Henry Ford of programming) created the Fortran assembly language to automate and make the programming process more efficient. With increased business interest in computers in the late 1950s, John McCarthy, who cofounded MIT's artificial intelligence lab in 1959, initiated Cobol, or Common Business Oriented Language, to allow people to program using English. After the 1960s, software started getting more headlines from an industry and a press that previously only cared about new and faster hardware. By the 1980s, companies like Microsoft were creating business empires out of programming. For a book that claims to tell the story of the software revolution's instigators, it's frustratingly short on characterization. There's the occasional flourish, like the description of Charles Simonyi who did groundbreaking work at Xerox's PARC research facility and essentially created Microsoft Word showing up for debugging sessions in a special "debugging outfit": a black net shirt and translucent skin-tight black pants. But this account of reputed fringe visionaries lacks flash and loopiness. National author tour.

"Go to" is a programming term that refers to the ability to jump from one place in a software program to anywhere else, rather than proceeding in a strictly linear manner. It is just one of the myriad developments covered in this history of computer programming from the 1950s to the present. New York Times technology correspondent and coauthor of U.S. vs. Microsoft, Lohr begins with the development of Fortran and appropriately ends just past the creation of the decidedly nonlinear World Wide Web. He describes the conception and explosion of the Java programming language and the growth of the open-source and free software movements. One appeal of Go To lies in its coverage of unsung but pivotal programmers; Lohr emphasizes the contributions, for example, of women software pioneers beginning from the earliest days of stored-program computing. Unfortunately, this broad coverage also detracts from the readability of the narrative. Lohr describes each programmer's introduction to programming and significant contributions, yet most early experiences and motivations are similar enough that it can be difficult to keep the cast of characters straight. Good Book but Computer History Wrong

I enjoyed this book very much. It was certainly true that nobody could predict who would be a good programmers. I must confess that I picked those who were intelligent and enthusiastic. It sounds like a jungle out there.
Now for my hot buttons. Why am I not surprised that the history is wrong? It's because the author suffers from the writers' "Curse," assuming things written down are the truth. Johnny von Neumann never even saw the ENIAC until its design was fixed and the system almost built. He did consult with Dick Clippinger and his programming group from 1947/48 when they turned the ENIAC into a stored program computer. At that time, people were presenting various instruction sets for computers and von Neumann suggested a one-address code with a central accumulator architecture for the ENIAC, which we used. My group at the Moore School was under contract to do the ENIAC programming. Actually, Dick Clippinger, Adele Goldstine and I, with some help from DRs. Giese and Galbraith from Aberdeen did the actual programming.
When von Neumann saw the ENIAC, he was excited by it and, learning Pres Eckert and John Mauchly and their design team were already at work on EDVAC, the ENIAC successor, he asked if he could sit in on the meetings. The EDVAC design already included the stored-program concept. See Eckert's interview with Peter Vogt for the Smithsonian Computer History Project. After a number of meetings, von Newmann skipped some meetings to go to Las Alamos, but he sent back the article, which Pres and John took as an internal document, summarizing the content of the meetings. Other members of the team were not allowed to write or talk about it. Goldstine, who was the Security Officer distributed von Neumann's article widely. Some Security Officer. Both Goldstine and von Neumann came from the University World where publishing is used to stake out claims. Both knew exactly what they were doing. They betrayed their colleagues and continued to do so. When Pres and John applied for an EDVAC patent, they discovered that this enterprising duo had already applied. Not too many people took von Newmann seriously when he said he did it to ensure that it remained in the public domain and not used for commercial purposes. Apparently, Goldstine felt von Newmann was a better meal ticket than one from Pres and John. He was wrong. Pres and John went on to develop BINAC, the first stored program computer. Yes, it ran for 48 hours without an error in March 1949. Reported in the Franklin Institute newsletter. Then, they went on to build the first electronic commercial computer. As far as I know, nobody, other than the organizations von Newmann consulted with, ever built the Johnniac while the computer industry switched with UNIVAC to the commercial world.
I could continue on, but I know I am unfair to expect you to buck the tide. However, I am now 77 years old and I feel that someone should tell the truth, and if not me, who?

A fascinating Software History 101

For a narrative history of computer programming, from the pre-Fortran days to the present, this book does a remarkably good job. It describes in vivid, readable fashion the people, the period, and the problems they solved. It also gives the reader a real sense of the kind of creativity involved in programming, the excitement and what it takes. The book is filled with neat historical tidbits (from the origins of the term "beta" to the notes of Charles Simonyi, a Xerox PARC refugee who joined Microsoft, to Bill Gates, laying out much of that company's plans for the next 20 years). For anyone interested in software, and the extraordinary cast of characters behind the technology, this book is a clear, well-written, authorative survey. It covers a lot of ground -- and it it does it awfully well!

Technical history of system software development

This is a good book on the technical and intellectual development of system and utility software from Fortran days to now. It is meant to be an overview of some of the high lights of the technical developments and most interestingly the people and the players. The author purposefully does not cover application software and the huge effort and development in those areas whether in a product like Mathematica or in computational fluid dynamics programs. He certainly captures the flavor of the operating system, compiler, and utility developments that were so critical to progress in computers.
The book is strongest where the history is known. Present day developments such as Linux and open software along with the key people are discussed in the last chapter, but no one knows yet what importance will come of that, and this is left up in the air.
There are not that many books that range over the history of software development as this one does. Lohr is no gee whiz amateur; this is a solid professional job where the flavor of a development is really captured (at least in my view). One can just imagine how the development of Fortran opened up immense possibilities in simulation and modeling. Good word processors had broad applications and made life much easier for all of us. Lohr chooses his subject and enlivens it.
He discusses the people involved in many of the developments with a varying degree of detail, so we capture some of the flavor of the personalities. This is done well without giving us ranging biographies or too much psychoanalysis. This is a book well worth reading.

Martin Meadows is the pen name of a bestselling author who has dedicated his life to personal growth. He constantly reinvents himself by making drastic changes in his life. Concise, well written guide to simplifying your life.

Martin Meadows does a simple thing really. He mulls through self improvement literature finds the choicest bits, puts them into a condensed format and shares them with the world. His books are concise, well written and most importantly actionable. In the short time I have been reading his work I've made more changes in my life than I have in years of trying to do this on my own. I've received something from each of his books I've read. I've taken the advice given on simplifying my life by reducing my number of choices specifically where my wardrobe is concerned. I save time getting ready for work, time doing laundry and energy costs for doing less laundry. May sound simple but the point is I actually took action and in many cases I'll read something and not act upon it. Simply due to information presented in this book. Unlike many ebooks everything is spelled correctly and grammatically correct. This is huge for me. I view that as the appropriate level of concern for his readers and pride in his work. If you're looking to simplify your life and only have a limited amount of time to devote to reading a book on the subject I honestly think you couldn't do much better than this.

The way to make life seem a LOT more fulfilling

Martin’s new book is right up my street. Pure and Simple. And yet the title brings up a question. Can you really have it all and simplify your life at the same time?
The book begins by reminding me that too much randomness in my life produces confusion. If there are too many decisions to make, the result is often rushed decisions, poor decisions, or no decisions when it matters. Martin offers some quick examples of how to reduce my daily decision load; by choosing to make fewer choices. Martin makes it seem simple.
Martin suggests that a focus on happiness makes choice easier, and the results of choice more rewarding. I’ve certainly experienced a feeling of freedom when decluttering. Martin gives some more ideas that will be worth trying.
In Pure and Simple, I get three ‘rules’ for living more simply. They aren’t really ‘rules’; they are suggestions about choices. And they make a lot of sense! Then Martin give s three steps for developing a positive mindset, which makes the process (of staying positive) seem easy and worthwhile.
Martin has done a lot of research fo this book, and offers alternative points of view, so I can weigh the evidence as he has. His process of reducing stress in life caused me to ask a lot of questions of myself. Maybe it will be the same for you too.

PURE & SIMPLE, WITH GREAT STRATEGIES FOR DE-STRESSING!

In this book by personal development author Martin Meadows, readers are set to learn some new skills for personal mastery and pushing it further towards generating a happier, more productive lifestyle that matters.

In chapter 1 "Pure and Simple", Martin shares with us several strategies that begins with, "making Fewer Choices." When we have too many choices, it is hard to choose or make a decision. Fewer choices narrows the playing field an makes it easier to drill down and decide what we want. It is an important chapter because it focuses in on the essentials and forces you to function with "less is better"

In chapter 2 "What really makes you happy" the topic is about getting rid of clutter and how to stop hoarding all your stuff. Getting rid of clutter induces that feeling of freedom.

Chapter 3 "Simple Rules for Simplification" is about buying higher quality products to save money in the long run, creating your won list of simple rules, and focusing on the small chunks of BIG goals to make them easier to manage.

Chapter 4 is a great piece of content that everyone should read. Wasting time is something that has become the norm these days, especially with social media tapped into our lives on our PCs and even in our pockets at just a reach away. watching TV and using social media kills hours of time a day and takes away from some of the joyful moments because we are all so obsessed with "sharing" and staying connected in every moment of our lives, that we are actually missing our life. My favourite chapter in the book is this one.

Chapter 5 gives us a look at the importance of building a powerful positive mind-set and why we need it to get to that happy spot. This chapter gets into gratitude, resilience and how to worry less.

Overall this is a nice book with some useful strategies and tips to live a simpler life, achieve more freedom, and get more done by doing less.

A delightful account that sees the wood for the trees

Stendhal is well-known to New Testament students for his provocative article on 'The Apostle Paul and the Introspective Conscience of the West' (1963) and here at last is his book-length reflection on Paul's letter to the Romans, where he works out that article at greater length and tied to the text.
It is succinct (around 80 pages of text) and written with a superb lightness of touch. This is 'the big picture' of Paul at his most excited, guiding the perplexed reader through the tangled maze of the argument with humour and yet a serious concern to grasp the same vision of God which motivated Paul.
If there is a complaint, it is perhaps that Stendahl makes such short work of the intricacies of Romans that one wonders if he is perhaps a little more straightforward than Paul himself. Never the less, he nuances well known positions with clarity (notably rejecting simplistic ideas of '2 covenants' sometimes attributed to him) and he reminds us of just why we ever bothered with the New Testament in the first place.
Highly recommended.

Insightful overview on Romans. NOT a complete treatment.

`Final Account, Paul's Letter to the Romans' is a very small book by the very distinguished Krister Stendahl, a Professor Emeritus of Divinity at Harvard, whose liturgical affiliation, as one could easily assume from his Scandinavian name, is Lutheran.

In a world filled with big books on Paul in general and on his Epistle to the Romans in particular, this slim volume is a bit of an anomaly. One thing the size tells us is that unlike the tomes by the likes of Ernst Kasemann, Karl Barth, and N. T. Wright, this volume will not be giving us a chapter and verse exegesis of the famous Epistle.

The volume is even smaller when you take into consideration the fact that 25 pages, a full third of the volume, are taken up with a reprint of the RSV translation of the letter. One thing that is important to realize is that this is not gratuitous padding, as it is all part of Bishop Stendahl's big idea.

I can't help but think of Isaiah Berlin's famous comparison of the hedgehog and the fox in reading this book. One may say that while Kasemann and Wright and James Dunn (in `The Theology of Paul the Apostle') deal with many, many ideas, Stendahl, in this volume, brings us no more than a few `big' ideas.

Stendahl's most impressive `big' idea is the notion that one should embark on reading Romans with an open mind, devoid of all preconceptions. Therefore, the good Bishop provides us with his preferred translation for studious reading.

Since, as Stendahl points out, Romans has been claimed as the documentary underpinning of every variety of theological point of view from Augustine to the present, it is easy to find oneself with an inadvertent pair of tinted glasses. The Lutheran shade of glasses is, of course, the issue of justification by faith, which every non-Lutheran commentator points out is actually not one of Paul's major themes, as he brings it up only in Romans and Galatians, the Epistles wherein he is arguing against Gentile Christians having to follow Mosaic law.

While Stendahl is a self-confessed Lutheran, he is well aware of this slant and side steps it as deftly as many earlier commentators such as William Wrede and Albert Schweitzer.

One important original idea is usually enough for me to consider a book valuable, but Stendahl has more. Two of the more novel thoughts are in his first lecture, where he says Paul's primary concerns were with his health and with the fate, following the advent of the Messiah, of Israel. The second seems not too novel until you realize, from Stendahl's perspective, that Paul had a genuine concern for the Jews. The first issue is easy to overlook, and tends to get lost with all the more theological issues abounding in Paul's writings. But Paul's letters are filled with puzzlement over why Paul, chosen by God to be an apostle, should be afflicted by such corporeal weaknesses.

While this book offers only some highlights from a very sound source, it's virtue, aside from the value of those insights is the fact that it can be read from cover to cover in an evening.

This may be the best book with which to start on Romans, but it should not be the last. It will certainly set you out in the right direction as you plough your way through more complete exegeses of Paul's Epistle to the Romans.

Is the occurrence of superconductivity in metals and in certain organic polymers, related to the presence of nerve impulses that propagate within the human brain? Do avalanches in the mountains of Utah and the mudslides in California have anything to do with the folding of protein molecules into their intricate three-dimensional shapes as they are synthesized in the living cell?

At first glance, topics such as these may seem to be unrelated. However, closer examination reveals each to reflect the presence of some particular source of nonlinearity in nature. Advances in obtaining solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations over the past twenty-five years have led to the discovery of an exciting new concept. This concept predicts the emergence of coherent structures that have their own unique nonlinear dynamics. The appearance of such structures in DNA, proteins, membranes and cellular organelles could play a key role in determining life's processes.

The Encyclopedia of Nonlinear Science is a remarkable compendium of topics in many areas of science. It is the first of its kind. Nonlinear Science of Nonlinear Nature

Encyclopedia of Nonlinear Science, edited by A. Scott and just published by Routledge, New York, 2005, as I think, will be one of the most important publications of this year and, probably, of many next years.

Already the first glance at the book strikes by the astonishing variety of topics covered in one volume. This is achieved by effectively combining a mathematically accurate language with the simplicity of presentation, without overloading the material by formulas. Sufficiently simple and transparent presentation makes this book easy to read for

students, starting from the undergraduate level and up, as well as for general scientists interested in grasping the essence of nonlinear phenomena. These phenomena are so common and widespread in Nature, being familiar in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Geology, Medicine, and Social Sciences, that it looks impossible to find any one discipline which would have no

relation to them.

The simplicity and clarity of presentation, combined with a rather precise formulations, make the material of the Encyclopedia available to practically anyone. Those who would wish to go to more detailed studies will find a sufficient list of references to both historical publications as well as to the current scientific literature. The Editor, Alwyn Scott, has made a great job in supporting this nice and rare style combining the clarity and brevity of the entries with their accurateness.

I have no doubt that this Encyclopedia is a must for any

university library. And to enjoy having it at home would be a pleasure and help for any scientist.

The book for many

The book like that was long awaited, and the only reason it has not appeared, say, ten years ago, is probably that compiling it would be an enormously demanding task for anyone. Thus, the effort of the Editor, Professor Alwyn Scott, should be highly appreciated.

The Encyclopedia of Nonlinear Science includes an enormous wealth of information in various sciences: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, engineering... At the first glance, the book may be perceived as a kaleidoscope of bits and pieces of these sciences. Thus, one may ask, what nonlinear science is and does it exist at all? It does. The basis unifying the problems outlined in the book is that, notwithstanding the huge variety of the phenomena involved, their mathematical description has much in common (nonlinear equations) and, moreover, the terminology ("language") used to characterize qualitative features of the process, such as "oscillations," "waves," "solitons," "chaos," and many others, are equally applicable to numerous natural phenomena as well as to products of human creativity.

Having said that I must also stress that most of the underlying math is simple enough for non-specialists. Actually, the book entries could conditionally be classified into "mathematical," in which basic equations and their solutions are briefly discussed, and "natural," giving a concise description of a variety of natural phenomena. Finally, historical essays should be mentioned, too.

This reference book has been edited and written by high-class professionals. If you are a student, a teacher or instructor in math, physics, chemistry, so on, or you are a researcher, an engineer, or simply a curious individual who wants to help his youngsters to succeed in science, you should consider getting the Encyclopedia.

Great List of Tools

One of my favorite parts about the book was the list of tools. I don't think I've seen a list that expensive before. Also, John talks a lot about help a reporter out and using public relations and media to grow your following. For me, I have always done a lot of updates on social media but I've never really taken the time to promote myself on third party sites like he mentioned. Overall I like the book. Especially because it gives you a pretty good framework for becoming a digital influencer and provides good background. The section on viral marketing and the importance of having it invoke an emotion was also interesting. Writing a good headline makes all the difference.

This is an awesome referential novel because it shows you exactly where you should focus your energies in achieving things in the digital world. The problem is that we often have to deal with too many resources and not enough time, so having something that can really help us hone in on exactly what we are working with can be a life saver.

This book does just that, and it is told in a friendly and conversational way. I commend the author greatly in his style and content!

Digital Influencer is fantastic! It taught me a lot about where to spend my time to get the biggest impact which is so important when you're super busy all of the time! The action items were really helpful in helping me take what I learned from the book and use it right away. I especially loved the secrets to guest posting like a pro and how to befriend influencers and leverage each other! I can't wait to get started on my influencer plan of action! I definitely recommend this book!
