About the Author
Vamik D. Volkan is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, an Emeritus Training and Supervising Analyst at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute and the Senior Erik Erikson Scholar at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He was the Medical Director of the University of Virginia's Blue Ridge Hospital and director of the University of Virginia's Center for the Study of Mind and Human Interaction. He is a past president of the International Society of Political Psychology, the Virginia Psychoanalytic Society, the Turkish-American Neuropsychiatric Association, and the American College of Psychoanalysts. He is also the author or co-author of forty books and the editor or co-editor of ten more. He has served on the editorial boards of sixteen professional journals including the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and has published more than four hundred scientific papers or book chapters.

Handy reference work

My Art History department adopted this book as its official style-manual a few years ago, and we assign it as a textbook for our writing and methodology class. To my great dismay, however, our bookstore has had some trouble ordering it this year, and so I have encouraged my students to "cut the Gordion knot" by ordering it from Amazon. The chapters on choosing a topic and organizing an argument are, I think, useful and well-written, but the greatest value of this book is Chapters 9 and 10, which provide clear instructions for writing footnotes and bibliography. This may be a mechanical task, but it is a frustrating one for many students, because there are so many possible formats to use (MLA, Turabian, etc.) Barnet's system has the virtue of being designed specifically for research papers about art and art history, and the format he recommends is clear and logical. The book also reprints the instructions for contributors from the Art Bulletin, the most prestigious art-historical journal in this country, and so will be of value for graduate students and recent PhD's preparing their first works for publication.

I was quite surprised, but I really like this book. I was having a lot of trouble writing an art history paper and this book really helped clarify my thoughts. The book asks pointed questions that helps you focus your thoughts. I would strongly recommend this book to someone writing an art history paper.

Useful in some ways, not in others.

I recently read the 6th edition of this book in hopes that it would help me to improve my ability to understand and write about art. I found that the book is a direct, well-written primer for someone finishing high school or beginning their undergraduate degree, but for someone with a bit more experience, it turns out to be a mixed bag.
I know next to nothing about visual art. I'm the quintessential "knows what I likes, and likes what I knows" type of guy. On the other hand, I'm a graduate student in English, so I'm well-practiced in writing essays and in applying various theoretical and critical methods. I read this book in the hopes that it would help me to better understand art. That is, I wanted to learn, as Sylvia Barnet puts it, "How does art mean?" The beginning of the text does introduce some basic questions and ways to think about different kinds of art, ranging from painting, to sculpture, to architecture, to photography, to video art, etc. However, this is not meant to be an instructional book to teach someone about art. It is more like an assistant text for a freshman-level art history course. A great deal of the book is spent discussing how to organize essays, sentence structure, revising, formatting, and some instruction on critical methods. But, again, this book is not a book on writing. It's not about art, it's not about writing, so what is it? Well, like it says, it's about writing about art. A good deal of this book was useless to me, but some of it was enlightening. If you've already got some experience studying the visual arts, or some experience writing, or you just want a really indepth study on either, pick out something else. If, however, you just want an easily understood, basic primer on writing and art, this isn't a bad choice at all.

Grade 8 Up-Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is a classic science fiction work that continues to be a significant warning to our society today. Tony Britton, the reader, does an excellent job of portraying clinical detachment as the true nature of the human incubators is revealed. The tone lightens during the vacation to the wilderness and the contrast is even more striking. Each character is given a separate personality by Britton's voices. As the story moves from clinical detachment to the human interest of Bernard, the nonconformist, and John, the "Savage," listeners are drawn more deeply into the plot. Finally, the reasoned tones of the Controller explain away all of John's arguments against the civilization, leading to John's death as he cannot reconcile his beliefs to theirs.The abridgement is very well done, and the overall message of the novel is clearly presented. The advanced vocabulary and complex themes lend themselves to class discussion and further research. There is sure to be demand for this classic in schools and public libraries.

At what price contentment?

Brave New World is an excellent book and, what's more, one that seems to be becoming more relevant all the time in our fast paced world. And unlike many other books with a similar philosophical orientation, Brave New World is quite refreshing, as Huxley's prose is somehow manages to be clear, elegant and insightful without being overly obvious.
As regards the actual plot, Brave New World is in essence a portrayal of a utopia (or dystopia, depending how you look at it) in which there is constant prosperity, people are always content, as they are well provided for and have been programmed to like their society in all respects. This programming is undertaken by workers in charge of breeding the future citizens of this idyllic world, which is united under one government, under Ford. As everybody has been programmed to like their class and job, everybody is constantly content and has no wish to do anything other than what is required of them. If they happen to become depressed, of course, there is always the mood altering drug Soma.
Through presenting a few individuals who do not exactly fit into this molded world, however, Huxley presents us with a challenging and endlessly interesting question: What can possibly be wrong with a world in which everybody is happy, even if there is no real free will involved in actuality? If we can make ourselves superficially content and never have to suffer a moment of desperation or uncertainty, why not just do that? With the help of William Shakespeare and a young man from a "savage reservation," Huxley explores the alternatives to his invented society's promotion of mindless satisfaction. Should true art and the deep thought and emotion that inspires it be sacrificed to perpetual happiness without thought or deeper feeling? Or is the attempt to find these deeper meanings just silly and self-defeating, as we will all meet the same fate in the end?
In this era of quick entertainment, instant gratification and materialism unbounded, there are no better questions to be asking than these, the ones at the heart of Brave New World. Huxley opens the book by allowing the reader to eavesdrop on a tour of the Fertilizing Room of the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, where the high-tech reproduction takes place. Into this seemingly advanced civilization is introduced John, a "savage" from a reservation where old human culture still survives. Thus, BNW is also a tale of "culture shock" and conflict.
Huxley creates a compelling blend of bizarre comedy, serious character study, futuristic extrapolation, and philosophical discussion. His writing style is crisp and witty, and cleverly incorporates references to canonical works of literature. Probably the scariest thing about BNW is the fact that, in many ways, humanity seems to be moving closer to Huxley's dystopian vision.

Chillingly Prescient Satire On What We Are Becoming!

As critic and best-selling author Neil Postman points out so well in the introduction to his book "Amusing Ourselves To Death", we have congratulated ourselves prematurely by figuring we made it past the totalitarian nightmare state depicted in George Orwell's gripping cautionary tale "1984". Perhaps, Postman suggests, we should remember another visionary totalitarian nightmare scenario and use it to critically examine the contemporary state of social and psychological well-being. Of course he was referring to Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World, written before Orwell's by 15 or so years, and even more frightening in its own way in the world it describes. More and more, that frightening vision looks like our contemporary world.

Picture his ironic portrait of a populace doped into Nirvana on "soma" (read Prozac and Zoloft), isolated and diverted by petty preoccupations in mindless trivial pursuits (read video games and internet surfing to all the porno sites), oblivious to anything not directly pertaining to themselves and totally unaware of the degree to which they are being socially, economically, and politically co-opted. Beginning to sound more familiar? Remember, says Huxley, brute force is not the only method an oligarchy can use to influence, manage, and finally control our hard-won freedoms and liberties; it can be done with over-indulgence and the deliberate fertilization and promulgation of apathy through self-absorption, as well.

Even Huxley says (circa 1960, almost 30 years after the original publication) in the preface of the revised version of the book that he is alarmed as to how quickly the sort of events he figured might take a hundred years such as the appearance of political internationalism and transnational corporate entities are already arising and beginning to control more and more of the substance of our social, economic, and political lives. Just how much do we know other than what we hear and see on television, for example? Yet the electronic media is owned and managed by transnational corporations. Ever wonder why we never heard much muckraking news coverage of the NAFTA or GATT deals even though many recogized the two bills would radically change the nature of international trade? Perhaps the transnationals didn't want too much hype or fuss. Starting to feel uncomfortable yet? Still, people keep insisting this was just a whimsical work of fiction, that it was a parable, that he really wasn't serious.

Read this book, but do so slowly, taking notes, recognizing how many contemporary parallels there are to each of the "whimsical details" he conjures up, and then figure out in your own mind how very close he was to prognosticating just how far we have come toward the "Brave New World" in which everyone's soul and awareness is for sale. The kids are wowed by the recent movie The Matrix", yet few appreciate just how much of a fabled existence we are already living in. No pain, no sorrow, no trouble of any kind. Instead, we have our individual and collective consciousness "managed" pharmaceutically; our psyches eased into blithering bliss with "soma", our diminishing attention spans sidetracked and occupied by petty diversions and endless entertainments. Pass me the corndogs, honey!

But, hey! Don't touch that dial; Regis is on! They may retry OJ! What did Bill Clinton really do with that cigar? Have you seen the latest news about the stock market? Did you get any of that new beer they're advertising? it's supposed to make me a real ladies man....What's the latest gadget? Can I buy one on-line? By the way, where are the kids? Hell, never mind, just turn up the volume; I think I know the answer to that question Regis just asked... Meanwhile, folks, our awareness of what is going on around us, our rights and our liberties are being power-washed away, obliterated, and we cannot even see it happening in front of us. We are diverted, distracted, content in our own little worlds. So welcome to our nightmare. Better beware; it just looks like Nirvana. It's really another "Brave New World".

Here is another awesome book which should be a required text for writers. With great short essays on writing by some of the best writers, it has much valuable material in a small package. All so worthwhile, with practical advice and incredible insight on the art and world of writing. So many favorite pieces from some of the greats. Entertaining and instructive.

Attempt by good writers to explain how to write well

Because someone can write well doesn't mean they understand why they write well, or, if they do, doesn't mean they can articulate it, and if they can, that someone else can "get" it. Edgar Allan Poe thinks it was his careful working out of the sounds and rhythms of his phrases and words that led to his successful works, and doesn't realize it had absolutely nothing at all to do with any of his analyses, or pre-analyses. A good writing style doesn't come from figuring things out. It's the problem of knowing how to do something well not necessarily implying that you know why or how you do it well, or that you can convey it to someone else. So although this book's heart may be in the right place, I feel it doesn't succeed in bring its reader any closer to knowing how to write well.

Great book!

This book sets out, in the context of a story, an excellent system for running checks on one's own decisions. I recommend it highly to anyone who has ever wondered why they repeatedly have made bad decisions (in the sense of not reflecting their own true values and interests) in the past, or would like to make even better decisions in the future. Through two questions, each having three aspects, the decision maker can reflect on whether they are dealing with what is real or imagined, and whether they are being true to themselves. A very short, easy read, but extremely useful. Highly recommended for everyone, including young people.

Yes or No...

The book of the week was Yes or No by Spencer Johnson. Johnson is the same author of Who Moved My Cheese and The One Minute Manager. He uses a fictitious stories to illustrate a main idea. This particular story dealt with making decisions. Learning how to make decisions is an incredibly important skill to master. It sounds silly to think of deciding as a skill, but some people have it and some people just don't.

The more comfortable you feel making a decision, the more valuable you are to any organization. Most people in the world hate making a decision. Even in a social setting, you'll see a group of people trying to decide where they want to eat... and an hour later they finally made their pick. All the while, every person in that group is hungry and anxious. I think most people have been there and it is not pleasant at all. You may even notice those that are comfortable with making decisions correlate with high paying executive positions. Any organization can see value in someone that doesn't take extraordinary amounts of time to make a decision.

I'm not going to spend a lot of time giving detail about the fictitious part of the book. Unlike Johnson's other books, the story in this one wasn't very good. The decision making map, however, is pretty good. Before I go any further though... I have made it clear that it is valuable to have the ability to make decisions. The next step is to learn how to make good decisions. That is what really separates the pack. The decision making map in the book is directed toward helping you make good decisions. So here it is:

I avoid indecision and half-decisions based on half-truths

I use both halves of a reliable system to consistently make better decisions:

a cool head and a warm heart

I USE MY HEAD
by asking myself a practical question
AND
I CONSULT MY HEART
by asking myself a private question

Then, after I listen to myself and others, I make a better decision and act on it

To use my head, I ask a practical question:

Am I meeting the Real Need, Informing Myself of Options, and Thinking It Through?

YES or NO?

Is it a mere want or a real need? What information do I need?
Have I created options?
If I did 'x' then what would happen. Then what?

To consult my heart, I ask a private question:

Does My Decision Show I Am Honest with Myself, Trust My Intuition, and Deserve Better?

YES or NO?

Am I telling myself the truth? Does this feel right? What would I decide if I was not afraid? What would I do if I deserved better?

If 'Yes' I Proceed ............ If 'No' I Rethink

What Is My Better Decision?

With time and practice the map becomes second nature and you just end up making the right decision without much thought. This is ideal. But to get there you have to practice. Use the decision map here and correlate yourself with all those other high powered executives out there.

The book was pretty good. It doesn't take much time to read, so if you don't like it you didn't waste much of your time. As always, If you have any questions on the book don't hesitate to ask. I would be more than happy to help anyone that wants it.

Practical Advice For Decision Making

As the author of the "One Minute" series of books, Spencer Johnson has maintained his style of short and mostly conversational story telling with "Yes or No" to convey the art of making decisions. Set as a story of a weekend hike with a number of professionals all looking to improve the same abilities, the main character uncovers a very clear and sensible approach for making any decision.

The book is short enough to be read in an hour. The content and dialog is somewhat dry and hokey at times. Yet inside the book contains several nuggets that compensate for any of the negative aspects of its presentation. The ideas are thought provoking, logical, and they work. If you struggle with some of the choices in your life or even find that you are not getting the results you'd prefer from some of your major decisions, this short book is well worth the effort.

Cannabinoids and the Brain is an excellent source for cannabis research. The book may be difficult to read for people that don't have a medical or research background. Nevertheless, if you have taken anatomy and physiology I and II in college you should not have much difficulty understanding the terminology.

Not worth the read or the money.

Dear Author - If it was true that cannabinoids were an effective medicine do you not think
that they would have been exploited by the massively wealthy pharmaceutical industry by now ?
In 1985 there was some positive results from scientific study on the chemical THC found in
the cannabis plant (one of 750) but the adverse side effect profile for the use in chemo-therapy
induced nausea and vomiting made it less than desirable. By the 1990s better drugs had been
developed and the pharmaceutical industry moved on - that left THC in the dust. Now in this
decade we see the pharmaceutical industry showing interest in CBD for Dravets - but it is still
in clinical trials for this rare and serious form of epilepsy in childhood and the results are in below
30% for efficacy and again with an adverse side effect profile that includes convulsions.
This book overly in its enthusiastic position on marijuana and its derivatives as medicine and
any book that starts off by saying that a plant has been used for thousands of years is suspect - hemlock,
periwinkle and poppies have been around for thousands of years but luckily we have modern evidence
based scientific study and research so people do not need to revert to primitive medicines with
serious side effects, - wild claims harm far more people than they help. This book is just one more piece of pot propaganda and is not worth the read. If this plant held promise - the pharmaceutical industry would have found it 30 years ago. A waste of time.

Essential reading, though imperfect

The first thing I want to say is this: If you plan on doing regression analysis in your research, stop what you are doing, and read this book first. I think this book represents THE current statement on how we should use regression. For Angrist and Pischke, regression is a technology for summarizing data. If regression is to be used for causal inference, then there is nothing in the specification of the model or the choice of estimator that can ultimately make the causal story persuasive. That is, you don't identify causal effects simply by including "control" variables in your regression. The identification comes from elsewhere---either a real or "quasi" experiment---and the regression is what you use to clean up the imperfections of the experiment and measure effects. Angrist and Pischke have done an enormous service to social science by writing a regression textbook that nonetheless emphasizes the primacy of design. This is a terrific corrective for the "101 flavors of regression" approach of textbooks to date.

Even with this emphasis on design, Angrist and Pischke show us that are a lot of nuances to the way that regressions measure such effects---e.g., in the presence of effect heterogeneity---and that's what this book explores in exquisite detail. It's a hugely important book and a very serious and rigorous treatment, despite it's apparently causal style. They make some claims that may strike some as outrageous---e.g., always using OLS, even for limited dependent variables---but the rigor of their presentation means that the onus is on those who disagree to think harder about why, exactly, they would prefer, say, a more parametric approach.

Nonetheless, it isn't a "5 star" book. It often feels a bit rough-draft-like. The presentation of technical material skips important steps rather haphazardly. I wonder if this was due to bad editing? Hopefully there will be a second edition that cleans up these rough edges, in which case it would be the ideal textbook on regression analysis.

Mixes issues

In their introduction Angrist and Pischke say "empirical research is most valuable when it uses data to answer specific causal questions, as if in a randomized clinical trial". The book aims to teach this approach to students of applied econometrics.

The emphasis on natural experiments and quasi-experiments which the authors espouse has become influential in some sub-areas of econometrics and the authors, particularly Angrist, have played a leading role in this development. However, this approach is not uncontroversial. The Journal of Economic Perspectives has an entire issue (Spring 2010, Vol. 24, No. 2, full text online for public) discussing the pros and cons and you may want to glance through it before buying this book.

Taken on its own terms, the book intermingles four levels of discussion: the philosophical and methodological issues around causality, tips and tricks on how the apply the workhorse models of (micro)econometrics, case studies, and the mathematical properties of models and estimators. This intermingling may be useful for a practitioner trying to see the big picture, but it makes things hard for a beginning student. The problem is compounded by the sketchiness of the mathematical derivations.

If you are starting out in econometrics you may be better served by traditional textbooks with more detailed and linear presentations such as Wooldridge's Introductory Econometrics and Econometric Analysis of Cross Section and Panel Data.

If your interest is primarily in causal inference, book-length treatments that focus only on that aspect can be found in Judea Pearl's Causality: Models, Reasoning and Inference or Morgan and Winship's Counterfactuals and Causal Inference.

Finally a useful econometrics book...

This is a wonderful book. Despite having taken many courses and read many statistics and econometrics books, I'm sometimes stuck in my own applied problems. Of course, these courses and books taught me how to derive asymptotic theorems or be careful when maximum likelihood fails, but this is not what I really need to know to solve my problems. Now with Angrist and Pischke, I have a book that is truly applied in focus -- one that explains why and how certain empirical strategies are convincing and one that is up-to-date with the latest examples of recent research employing these strategies. Real econometrics applied to real problems. This book should be on every applied economists bookshelf.
