The wildest, loveliest and least-travelled region of Alberta was R.M. Patterson’s home territory in the 1930s and ’40s. The Buffalo Head ranch was located in the foothills of the majestic Canadian Rockies. With the mountains as a backdrop, this dude ranch hosted visitors from around the world. Patterson bought it from its founder, a wild Italian named George Pocaterra, and explored the steep valleys and high mountain passes. Patterson’s tales of the ranch in The Buffalo Head culminate with a fantastic story of meeting a growling grizzly while crossing the Continental Divide in an October snowstorm.

About the Author
R.M. Patterson>/b>�(1898-1984) moved to Canada when he realized that working in a London bank would never bring him happiness. He spent the remaining years of his life pursuing adventure in the Canadian West and was a delightfully evocative writer and an intrepid explorer. Authoring a total of five books about his excursions into the Canadian wilderness and his life on a southern Alberta ranch, Raymond Murray Patterson earned himself legions of fans and made Canada's wilderness famous.

Great history

It does take Patterson a while in this book to reach the main topic - The Buffalo Head Ranch. But I didn't mind, as I was fascinated with his descriptions of European countries from the WWI era - some of which no longer exist. This book is a journey...and Patterson pictures the journey eloquently and in great detail. I have an old copy, purchased by an uncle around the time the book first appeared.

The Buffalohead Review

I bought this book on a recommendation from a trail guide from Anchor D Ranch. We had just finished the "Great Divide Ride". that took us up to Carnarvon Lake and the Lake of the horns. I wanted to get into that as soon as possible, but the first half of the book is taken up with Patterson's previous history. (On recommendation from his publisher) It is interesting, but wasn't what I wanted to read. I really got into the second half where he describes some of his adventures out in the mountains. I still really don't know where the Buffallohead Ranch was really located. His references to the Bar U place it somewhere in the Highwood I suspect. His description of the fire in that area in 1936 was great, as there is still evidence of that today. It was nice to hear how it was first hand. He was definitely one tough man. All in all if you want to hear history first hand from one who was there, this is the book to read. If you want to get into the meat of the Ranch life, skip the first half til later.
