A big case study on renovation

The first part of the book is full of satire and is amusing. The rest four parts lack this satire and are a little bit boring. However, I've found some noteworty quotation for my thesis "Image of a Manager" when I was working on in in the university. Also, the author writes how he dealt with journalists, and I've found it interesting.

The book not presents a case study of a company innovation but describes the history of IBM in nineties. For example, the author explains in detail why OS/2 was cancelled and why did they buy Lotus and didn't buy other companies.

It's very exciting to read how the CEO has diagnosed the problems of the company and which solutions did he find.

I would also recommend "Leading the Revolution" by Gary Hamel. It is a very serious examination on how companies innovate and why should they do it, with lots of remarkable examples. Gary Hamel uses plain friendly language.

The books of Chris Argyris about organizational learning are also about innovation. Although the language style is "academic", the books are interesting and somewhat unique.

A CEO's Account of an "Historic Turnaround"

At the outset, it is important to understand that this volume is not an autobiography; rather, in response to apparently substantial curiosity, Gerstner offers his explanation of how he and his associates achieved what he calls "IBM's historic turnaround." In process, he also explains how and why he became CEO, what his initial assumptions about the company were, to what extent they proved wrong (and why), and finally, what he had learned by the time he resigned as CEO after guiding IBM from April 1993 until March 2002. Having carefully observed Gerstner during the infrequent interviews to which he reluctantly agreed, the book seems to have been written by him without assistance except stenographic. The style and tone as well as the observations are clearly his. This is important. More often than not, a book bearing the name of a CEO as its author has been rigorously edited and thoroughly sanitized by one or more "manuscript doctors" before publication. Not so with this one.
Its title was perhaps suggested by that of a book written by Rosabeth Moss Kanter (When Giants Learn to Dance, 1989) and implies that it may be unlikely but is nonetheless possible for an organization as large and as cumbersome as IBM once was to become "quick on its feet" again. Soon after becoming CEO, Gerstner realized that IBM's culture -- not its core strategies -- prevented it from being able to "dance." As Gerstner observes, "[IBM's] decades-long run of uninterrupted success ties in with the other closely related, and vitally important, aspect of IBM's recent history. This is about its corporate culture -- specifically, the kind of culture that arises in an environment without intense competitive pressure or threats." By the time Gerstner had become CEO, the company and its people had lost touch with external realities. It was widely believed that what was happening in the marketplace was essentially irrelevant to the success of the company. "IBM's dominant position had created a self-contained, self-sustaining world for the company. IBM had ridden one horse, and ridden it well. But that horse could carry it only so far before it broke down.
This was the corporate culture which Gerstner encountered as he assumed his duties, a culture the product of two predominant forces: the runaway success of the System/360, and, the impact of the antitrust suit filed against IBM by the United States Department of Justice on January 31, 1969, the final day of the Lyndon B. Johnson administration. "For thirteen years IBM lived under the specter of a federally mandated breakup."
It would be a mistake to assume that most of the credit for what was accomplished at IBM during Gerstner's tenure as CEO should be given to him. He dedicated this book to "the thousands of IBMers who never gave up on their company, their colleagues, and themselves. They are the real heroes of the reinvention of IBM." This book explains how that was accomplished, a transformation whose objective was to re-establish "the high-performance cultured that animated IBM under both Watsons."
Having relinquished his duties as CEO to Sam Palmisano, Gerstner suggests that his successor has an opportunity to make connections to IBM's past which Gerstner had not. "His challenge will be to make them without going backward; to know that the centrifugal forces that drove IBm to be inward-looking and self-absorbed still lie powerful in the company. Continuing to drive change while building on the best (and [in italics] only the best) of the past is the ultimate description of the job of Chief Executive Officer, International Business Machines Corporation." It is probably too early to take full measure of Gerstner's performance in that position. However, now having his own account of those critically important years in IBM's history, we can at least appreciate the nature and extent of what he and his associates experienced...and what together they eventually accomplished.

Having considered the meaning of the concept in the East and West, Jullien argues that, if communication between cultures is to be meaningful, facile assumptions of universal values and complacent relativism need to be examined. It follows, therefore, that dialogue between cultures should not begin with issues of identity and difference, but rather by considering divergence and profusion. By no longer simply assuming universality, we allow for greater self-reflection.

This wide-ranging and engaging study will be of particular interest to students and scholars of philosophy and of Chinese culture and society. It will also appeal to a wider readership interested in contemporary thought and the challenges of communication between East and West.

About the Author
The author, Michael Brose, has been involved with mold making, casting, and puppet building since the late 1960's. He has had an interest in ventriloquism since age 10, and won first place in a talent contest at age 11, using a Jerry Mahoney vent doll and a routine from Paul Winchell's book 'Ventriloquism for Fun and Profit'. Michael evidently took this to heart! He has also personally worked with just about every mold making and casting material out there. In addition to being a professional figure maker, he has also earned his living as a professional mold maker for many years. Michael is in an elite class in this field, in that he is one of the very few that actually makes his living creating and selling high quality, professional, ventriloquist figures. The author is well known for his clear teaching and instruction, both in person and in print.

A necessary guide for anyone interested in figure making.

These books are great! I purchased the Winker Mechanics and the Figure Making Can Be Fun books and this review applies to both. The physical format of both books is large enough to allow for clear detailed photos and the text font is large. This is good for me because it lets me read the books without glasses! There are detailed instructions and a ton of photos to accompany the text. They cover all aspects of the fabrication process, the mechanics and the finishing of the figure. I know I will refer to them many times. They also include templates and sources for the products used in building of a figure. I highly recommend both of these books.

simple examples of C++ programs

The C++ programs given here explore numerous elementary aspects of the language. Plus, if you are already experienced in another language, you might well just use this book to quickly get the essence of the C++ syntax. While the book of course makes numerous references to "Programming Logic and Design", knowledge of another program (preferably object oriented) means that the concepts are already familiar to you.

The only drawback of the example code and problem sets is that they are perhaps too simple. Nothing really intricate is explored.

A Jewel of Philosophy

Aquinas' "Treatise on Happiness", comprising the first 21 questions of the "Summa Theologicae", is one of the greatest pieces of philosophy. The essence of the questions is the notion that happiness must be found in "a vision of the divine essence", namely, God. While I am skeptical of religious belief, I do find Aquinas' arguments intriguing. The object of happiness, he argues, is to no longer have desires, i.e., one's intellectual and willful curiosity is fulfilled. Because of this, one is not satisfied in merely knowing something, he argues, but in also knowing the cause. Therefore, even if one does know God exists, he states, one cannot be happy without knowing the cause of God. This can only be achieved through unity with God, most likely after death. It's a somewhat grim realisation for those hoping to achieve inner peace within their lifetimes, but a very fascinating and transcendentally Christian one.

Aquinas, of course, is best known for his fusing of the philosophy of the Greek rationalists, namely Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, with that of the Christian spiritualists, including Augustine. The "Treatise" is worth reading simply for this fact- that the fundamental system of Western education is based upon the fusion of rationality and spirituality, as first pioneered by Aquinas. The object, to achieve "imperfect", or earthly, happiness, and then attempt "perfect" transcendent happiness, has such import in Western culture that understanding the history of Europe and the West is contingent on a comprehension of Aquinas' theories.

About the Author
Anuj Saxena C.P.M., MCCM (Cert.), CPIM, PMP, Six Sigma Black Belt, is an Associate Partner at IBM Global Business Services. Prior to joining IBM, Mr. Saxena was Vice President of Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) Solutions at Alti, Inc., a management consulting firm where he lead multiple SRM and ECM Solution implementations in the US and Europe. Earlier in his distinguished career, he worked for several large consulting firms such as PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting, IBM Business Consulting Services, and Deloitte Consulting. His domain expertise includes supply chain management, materials management, sales & distribution, and enterprise asset management.

Mr. Saxena holds a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Masters Degree in Information Systems & Decision Sciences, another Masters Degree in Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and certifications in Purchasing Management, Contract Management, Production & Inventory Management, Project Management and Six Sigma. He is an active member of International Association for Contract and Commercial Management and National Contract Management Association. Over the last few years, Mr. Saxena has led over 25 ECM Solution implementations and has authored several journal and conference articles on project management, procurement, and plant maintenance.

A must have primer for anyone contemplating the implementation of an Enterprise Contract Management solution for their organization. This book provided me with a very thorough and complete study of what it takes to do ECM right, and how to get the most value out of an ECM solution.

When I was done reading the book I felt ready to tackle just about any issue regarding Enterprise Contract Management. Step by step it walked me through the process.

It also brings a very quantitative approach to measure the contract life cycle with the six sigma approach.
